does anyone owning a pre-2000 magna experience steering wheel shudder when the car goes over potholes and sharp-edged road features? this is a very common problem among most of the pre-2000 magnas i gather. i drive a 99 TH and i used to have a very bad shudder everytime i drove over one of those things. however, i got it 'fixed' under warranty. it improved, but there was still some shuddering. recently the problem has come back again and it's irritating the shit out of me. anyone knows what's the problem? some mechanics told me it's another one of those inherent magna problems.

The only shuddering i get is when i decellerate quicker than it can handle and you get the speed wobles - talking slowing from about 150+ to zero though, and also i have a bit of a wheel alignment issue - steering wheel wobels above 120km/s

but i am used to it - not wobble - just vibrate a bit!!

But ihave never incurred the issue you are talking about - i feel because it is a FWD it is more prone to steering issues!!

Manual...decellerating under brakes?

If so it's probably warped discs..just get them machined. It's a very common problem with magna discs

Warped discs arent always warped discs - ask blake about that - but the brakes are still good - squek once in a blue moon - so i am looking at just holding out and getting the RPW brake upgrade when i get the bigger wheels instead of getting the rotos machined.

And when braking normally it is ok - just under extreme breaking - like when cruising up the freeway and see a cop in front of you - you dont wanna fly past him at 150 now do you!!

Nah CV joints are all fine - that goodness -that has gotta be one of the most expensive parts with this car!!

Anyways - nah there fine - it is a brake issue.

But this isnt helping the original post - well actually it is - it is giving him some ideas as to what it may be.

I have a 97 TF Magna Advance and I hear you!
Everytime I go and there is like a simple line that curves in the road or uneven road , my steering shudder pretty easy but most the time my steering shudders when braking. Sometimes I can even hear steering wheel virabate. Also my brake pads are cheap gay ones i think, they made a griding/groaning sound.

Its gay gay gay and pisses me off the max! But thats my least of problem, First is first, i got a engine and timebelt to attend too :/

But yeah listen to killbilli, im pretty sure his right.

i WAS expecting a much higher bill...

That was too much man, i was expecting you to say something like $1000+ since CV Joints sound expensive and hard to do.

But its still $$$$... which dont grow on the tree :(

CVs have a distinct way of telling you they're the problem though...they will make an audible click when you turn, starts at full lock then eventually it will click at any degree of turning..then when it click in a straight line, you'd wanna hope you're on the way to the mechanic..lol

But yeah, I'd say warped discs mate, because mine used to only shudder under hard braking and that was the problem, machined them and it was fine.

I can understand you waiting for the brake package though! :)

Also the only other thing I can think of is that maybe the pads have uneven wear. This is caused (tho it is a rare occurance) by the spring that keeps the pads tensioned pushing unevenly on the pad. As I said, it's a rare thing but can't be discounted when analysing a problem :)

I hope the brake upgrade is for the TR/TS too...RPW seems to forget that the TR/TS exists...it took them forever to even put up the TR/TS V6 page! :(

I hear you KB - someone has already queried through the MOGWA forum about brake upgrades for the TR/TS series - and David sayed they are looking into it - shouldn't be too long!!

BUt 700 bucks?? i thought that was bloody cheap for upgraded brakes, calipers and rotors and lines!!!

I own a 2001 Magna and Ive only had it 2 weeks and I get the same thing. I think its called Rack Rattle, not sure. Even a Merc SL500 suffers it.

I also get steering shudder slowing from freeway speeds and even lower. I'm pretty sure the front dics need machining.

I'm considering taking it back to the dealer and asking them to get the brakes machined, balance the wheels, because I asked them to before I bought it, but they didnt bother. Reason is you get a 3 month statuatory warranty, meaning they should have to fix it free of charge.

Plus its developing a shit load of rattles. Can you belive its only got 30000kms on it.

Anybody heard bad things about their Remanufactured vehicles? They look like new but Im worried that I some of scam to off load lemons.

Oh yeah! The back left brake light was out when I bought it, plus the rear number plate bulbs! Plus when you open the drivers door the interior light doesnt come on, but it does for every other door. I swapped the door switches over and thats not the problem, so could it be a safety thind, where the drivers door switch wont work when rear bulbs are out? Because this also affects the auto headlamp off.

Sorry for the big speel, but puppy cost me a lot of dosh.

No I havent driven one, but I sure would love to though. Cruise around Sydney, park out the front of a smicko Cafe and drop the metal folding roof while jealous people look on is awe!

Well maybe not....

Yeah when Motor tested in a PCOY this year they said it had rack rattle.
