Ive got a fairly common wear and tear problem, the boot on my wagon isnt opening automatically anymore so need to replace or regas the gas struts. It seems like an easy job (pickup parts from autobarn-and install) but just want to make sure-has anyone done it-or would you recommend getting in an expert?

I just got new struts off ebay and fitted myself. Less than $40 a pair.

Watch you don't knock yourself out the first time you open your new boot though!:D
They've settled in nicely now... or maybe I've just gotten used to it.

I got a pair for $61.92 from Supercheap back in July...looks like I could have had them cheaper. They're still as stiff as a board, but at least we don't get hit on the head any more.

It's a 2 person job. Hubby fitted them while I held up the tailgate.:D

If you don't have anyone handy, you could get a $2 broom stick and chop it to size so that it firmly wedges between the boot floor and the tailgate. Though you need to lift the tailgate up and down slightly during the replacement process.

Cheers for your help all, will get onto Autobarn and fix it up before the start of some summer roadtrips!

Last year, when I had similar problems, I found that my local auto parts shop could supply a pair for ~$90, but I got a set of genuine struts from my local Mitsubishi dealer for $75.

Cheers,
Martin.
