View Full Version : Unidentified squeak

I was wondering if someone might be able to help me identify the following problem.

I'm getting a intermittent squeak from my Magna when driving. It seems to be coming more from the passenger side bonnet than the driver side; but is difficult to put a finger on as it doesn't happen when the car is idling.

It only seems to be happening when when the accelerator is being depressed and maybe for a few seconds after the pedal has been released - so kind of under load. It also (but much more rarely) happens when going downhill and picking up speed without depressing the accelerator pedal. In particular it happens around 40-70 kph, not so much above than, and dies down after the car has been running for a while, worst on start up from cold.

As mentioned already it doesn't happen at all when idling so with my limited knowledge struggling to identify what it is, car is a 94 TS Wagon 3.0V6. Only other thing of relevance I can mention is that I had the front CV boots changed and did an oil change recently.

Can anyone suggest what it might be or further simple tests I could do to eliminate other possibilities?

Cheers

Mite be worth checking the cv boots to see if they are rubbing on something. :)

Hmm, had a quick look - of course problem is I can only check it when it is stationary but it is pretty tight around the fittings.

I actually got them change at Kmart T&A - is it possible they say used the wrong or a generic part that isn't quite right and so its rubbing?

The major thing that confuses me is the fact that it doesn't happen at all when idling - does this pretty much rule out most belts?

check all belts for wear. It could be that one of the pulleys or tentioners is loose and needs to be tightened, in turn making the belt slip. if it's a high-pitched squeal then these are more relevant. had this happen in the lancer. :)

Well, thought I'd update and see if anyone here can lend any useful suggestions.

I took it into a KTAS and raised my concern that this had only started happening since they changed the CV Boots. They could hear this noise whilst driving but couldn't re-create it on the hoist.

So they said they weren't sure what was causing this and said it wasn't rubbing. The only one thing they said is that they could hear a very slight knocking noise on the driver side wheel bearning when they had a stethoscope to it. But this is a bit inconsistent as I do think the noise is worse from the passenger side of the car.

And they told me they greased a variety of things in the car. As it happend this greasing had done the trick, the noise had gone away and I was quite happy - or at least it went away for around 150 kms and then came back the same as before.

So I took it back in and now they are saying it is most likely the wheel bearing on the basis that they greased it and it went away, but they aren't 100% sure. When I asked why this had happened since the CV Boot change, they said that loosening the nut may have changed the pressure and that the wheel bearning must have been on the cusp if going.

Now, at this point I'm getting a bit alarmed - sounds like they had a hand in messing this up to me, but I guess I don't know enough about it.

Any opinions on this - I mean does it sound plausible that its the driver wheel bearning?

Do the wheel bearnings generally go at different times and is the driver side one more/less likely to go that the passenger side one?

And does this sound like KTAS stuffed the CV Boot change and ended up damaging the wheel bearning?

EDIT: Went down Ultratune for brakes and though I'd ask them if they could have a look at the same time. They checked it out saying it wasn't anything obvious but packed in as much grease as they could into the wheel bearing and low and behold it has stopped.
