Could be alot of things, cheap stuff i'd be looking at would be distributor cap, spark plugs, leads, air filter (make sure its not blocked/clogged) and possibly try some fuel injector cleaner.

yes, definately ignition.

My alternator decided to stop working on the way back from a trip to Falls Creek on the weekend. The battery ran dead and i couldnt rev the car over 3,500 - 4,000. When i tried to the plugs misfired and sent fuel through the exhaust and i ended up blowing flames out the back.

i dont hold it for long but it does backfire a little bit didnt have a friend behind me to see whether it has flames or not so i should get the alternator looked at to thanx

this will only happen if the battery is run flat as well. Which will happen as everything is run off the battery anyway. More specifically the Regulator on the alternator is faulty. It has actually stopped it from charging the battery.

I doubt it this is the case for you because you would notice your car die as soon as you switched headlights on.

sometimes the car can hesitate starting especially after abit of "spirited" driving this might be a sign of the regulator is on its last legs
