Hey Guys, just wondering if there is any point in using an aftermarket "possibly better" timing belt rather than the standard OEM brand from mitsu?

there wouldnt be any real advantage aprat from getting ones that are better built like the gates timing belts which are silicon compound (i think) and the teeths are stronger then OEM so less likely to break.

if your not putting out real big power that could break the belt then theres no real point but if its cheaper then OEM belts then by all means go for t. but from what iv heard aftermarket belts with bigger teeths will be a tad louder

I've got a kevlar one on my EVO and don't notice any difference. I only bought it cause I got it cheap with a bunch of other stuff at the time.

there isn't much to gain by adding a better belt. it may last a bit longer, but it also may not. you would still change it after 100,000kms as it is better to be safe than sorry.

From what my dad's mechanic has told me (I hate specialists, I'm an engineer), there isn't much point to getting a different belt because they don't do anything better, and they still wear out. He also said they tend to cost more.

It's your money, you do what you want.

more or less belts can last 110,000km on a stock engine, and nearly all car manufactures set the 90 or 100,000km service interval as a time to change. the only reason you'd want a aftermarket belt is because your engine is powerfull enough to cause excessive stress on to your belt, but you won't get any prolonged life ie. 150,000km out of it on a stock engine.
