View Full Version : 6G72 fix up or rebuild?
Hi all,
Well Ive got a Pajero, although it has the 6G72 motor as found in the Magna's.
The car has started to blow smoke at idle and when taking off after being left to idle. To me, it sounds as though the valve stem seals need doing. As far as I know, its not smoking when moving.
The motor has 230,000kms on it. At this stage I dont really want to rebuild the whole engine as I just purchased it as a second car to cart stuff around in and to go off road in. The smoking at lights is pissing me off a little though :D. Should I get the valve stem seals replaced, or get the whole heads done? I was going to get the seals and lifters changed as they are a bit noisy, so Im guessing it would set me back around about $700 ish.
Does that sound ok? How much do reconditioned heads go for?
Also, does anyone have recommendations of mechanics in the Sydney area?
thanks

Ive done the whole re-co heads thing on my 12v SOHC V6 and its not worth the trouble.
your looking at $750 for a set of fully rebuilt heads + VRS kit so thats $900 all up.
Plus labor to put them on & oil + coolant etc.
I would hunt down a Low K'ms 2nd hand engine, give that a clean, get one with a warranty, and use that.
You'd be looking at $500-$700 for a motor, and then I'm pretty sure its a day job to put it in.
This is what i should of done but didn't do. Now this rebuilt engine still pisses out oil from god knows where and I've now learned one good lesson

i had the same problem except it had smoke comming out all the time. i got my 6g72 heads reconditioned for $900 witch included port and polishing. most places recommended doing the rings, honing the cylinders and new head bolts. i did the work myself (except reconditioning the heads). all up it costed me about $1200 this included rings, vrs gasket set, reco heads, new head bolts oil, oil filter, coolant. personaly id reco the whole engine.

just buy the brandnew short engine from fleabay then?
cheaper than a reco and it's new

Word..
That or a DOHC if it'd fit?
The motor still runs nicely, so thats why I was of the opinion to get the valve stem seals fixed then drive it more and when it ****s itself then replace the motor with a reco or second hand one.
Also, where can I fine these short motors on Ebay? I have searched and nothing comes up.
Thanks

I'm still doing it. Will post here in a few days when I have finished.
Surprises so far were:
1. The connection for the air hose to the spark plug hole I had was the wrong size. See earlier post.
2. from what I had read here earlier I didn't think I would have to remove the rocker shafts. That wasn't so. They will need torquing down correctly so as to not warp the heads.
I'm only doing a bit each day so it will take me a while but I'll get back to you when I've finished.

Car is back together and running well.
No blue smoke on startup after being left overnight or on revving after idling for 5 minutes.
Well worth doing.
It is a fiddly job that I would advise to expect it to take 2 days but it would be wise to allow 3.
My chief concern was to be sure the split collets were correctly in place so as to not drop a valve when doing 100 km/hr on the freeway.
Bit hard on the back and the back of the legs but that is probably my age showing.
