View Full Version : Mufflers.... need some info..
Hey All,
Just need some info on mufflers..
Im wanting to know why you need to change the muffler on most vehicles?
Is there any real reason to be buying a magnaflow or lukey muffler? Or is it for wank factor? (rice factor)

its mainly the 'wank' factor
no.. its proven that by adding a 'high flow' or 'proformance' muffler, you can actulally gain kw's at the wheels...
take GBM for example.. standard wheel power is 94/96.. with the muffler ive got now.. its pulling 108/110kw
its a good wank factor too :D:D

Hey,
The reason why ppl change the rear muffler is because in teh magna exhasut setup the rear muffler is the most restricive part of it - so when that is changed, more power is expected, it is the first, cheapest and an excellent power gain mod in the execs - hoever i don't know about the VR-X's as they are tuned slightly better then the common exec!!

So you mean that the flow of the exhaust is restricted at the final point of exit?
So in some cases bigger is better?

It is a fine point - too big and no back pressure is no power
Too small - too much back pressure - no power - it is a real fine point
Magnas - 2.5" is the best!!

Your car has the same exhaust system as mine which is the Lukey LRXXXXXX, so no point changing it back to the Lukey again. But there is always the restriction in exhaust flow in all mufflers, just need to change to a free flow unit... aka my MagnaFlow :D :D ... researched almost 3 months on them dude... you should consider the one I have :) :)
Like all the other replies, letting the car fart better means more power. Keeping the standard piping and changing the Front and the Back of the system is good enough.
Every car is different, I might get 5Kws on the muffler you might get 10Kws... But then again, there's always the dyno!!!
Dude! My car is going into Motown Next Thursday, I've sold the Power ID and bought the Apexi RSM with the G sensor. They are going to see if can work in my car. :D

What was the cost on your Magnaflow?
Id have to go single though as i dont want to cut into the panel of my kit..
Wont beable to do dyno till i get this panel filter.. Have you found out whether they can get one in?

The Lukey MagnaV6Sports13 is talking about is the LR2779
It's a bit better than the VRX one..but not worth getting if you want a better one...go the one that he recommends.
The LR2779 is good if you want quiet at idle and noise at WOT.
That's how I like it and it's FANTASTIC.
Oh I have pics of my muffler tip too ;)

I am sure i have the LR2779 as well - only got a single 2.5" tip thow - and it is dirty i need to polish the chrome but i am too lazy!!
Maybe this weekend!!

i know nuts about exhaust systems and mufflers. can anyone tell me what's the stock standard exhaust system on the 3.5L exec? i am thinking of getting a sweeter tune from the exhaust (think quiet and refined bassy tune, NOT loud irritating and attention grabbing). not into power gains. do i just need to change the muffler? how much will it cost?

how long is a piece of string
what you get, depends on what it costs...
a good system should (system meaning muffler) set you back between 220-400 at the extreme end.
i bought the stock mitsubishi muffler upgrade - i think it sounds bloody excellent. Go down your local dealership and ask to listen to a current sports or to a verada gtv or something with the muffler with a single dump pipe..
It comes complete with a kit and its just 3 bolts - only took about 30 mins to get it all on and working..
i have a th 3.5 sports.
you could listen to mine but a recording wont do it justice and im in adelaide !

Hey mate - i paid 179 for my muffler change and it has a single chrome tip - sounds great - not too loud but you knwo about it when you put your boot into it!!
Manual
i think it was $239? i cant really remember but its nice to be able to just bolt it up - then you have a spare muffler too :) haha
it has a beautiful note though.. not too loud but loud enough to give it a bit more go :)
i would definately recommend it - on the other hand another one of my mates with a th 3.5 advance got the lukey put on and they sound basically the same but he got a nice speccy shiny silver tip..

Changing the muffler on a vrx/sports (TJ) isnt worth the cash. The gain you will get might be 1-2kw the most. Upgrading the exhaust on any other model though is well worth it. The unit mitsubishi dealerships sell is the same unit as the Lukey LR92 or watever you call it (manual mentioned it earlier in this topic). Lukey builds the mufflers for the vrx/sports. Only way to get any gain from the exhaust in the vrx/sports is to go for the "premium mufflers" such as apexi, magnaflow, etc. Having piping too large/small from the cat back causes too much pressure and therefore a power loss. However chucking a larger muffler at the end doesnt cause any loss of power. eg. 2.5" piping to the rear muffler with a 3" rear muffler.
btw lukey most likely sells the muffler cheaper than what mitsubishi dealerships do

VRX/Sports has 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust standard! To change it to anything else (unless you've turbo'd the sucker) would be stupid!
That size is perfect for the V6 range, Only change the muffler if you really want to..
If you change the zorst itself I'd put money on losing power rather than gaining it.
im gonna get this one

what's the stock standard on a TH 3.5L exec? so guru you reckon i should just get vrx muffler for my car? doesn't matter if the exec doesn't have the same exhaust as the vrx right? they'll still sound abt the same with the same muffler?

Don't know squat about mufflers, but was thinking about changing mine... My old TE was quite... very quiet... The first thing I noticed about the TJII was the muffler... I went through a closed off carpark complex and suddenly noticed the sound and thought, "Sweet! Who's car it that?!" before noticing it was in time with my own revs.. Love this car...
Upon that, though, I'm wondering if there's any gain to be made since the muffler is obviously up from the TE series.. The muffler isn't that noticable at times so I was looking to go for another muffler that would be a little more free flowing.. Looked around for that Lukey one... Hadn't come across the MagnaFlow one.. I doubt the new muffler would give that much of a gain to kW for me since the main difference between the TE and TJII was the ECU and muffler to increase power..
Can I assume my warranty will vanish as soon as I bolt something like this on?

Just a muffler? No.. Extractors.. perhaps.. if they can point the cause of the problem to the extractors..

Just get the Lukey LR2779 it's based on the VRX muffler and it'll be cheaper than getting a VRX one.

I am told that basically a Sports/VRX makes it extra power over the standard because of primarily the exhaust and some minor ECU changes.
I understand there is little point changing the VRX/sports muffler as its pretty good.
Get the factory upgrade sports muffler from mitsu and you nearly got urself a sports/vrx power plant.

Most mufflers are welded on... and must be done nicely
If there is a flange, always remember, the pipe has to go into the muffler inlet in order to have no restriction of flow... otherwise having the muffler upgrade is useless..
Night. do u want a price on the MF muffler too?

the only way id get a 4 inch "pipe" is if i folded mine 5 times! hehe
ii highly doubt by changing the muff on the vrx it would give it any more power...maybe 2kw max but that aint worth the couple hundred you'll spend to get it....

Yeah highly unlikely ill get much of a gain out of it..
What would you suggest for a couple of hundred to improve some performance?

for a few hundred bucks to make ya car faster id save it and wait and maybe get a chip or some cams or something......but if your gonna d cams then u will need fuel pressure reg, extractors etc to get the most out of it.....but thats gettin pretty serious performance.....if youve got the filter, exhaust/cai then youve got the cheapest bits done. You wont get much more performance by spending a couple hundred me thinks

Yeah, without spending silly amounts of money and kissing my warranty good bye i guess i cant do too much.
But the new muffler will make it sound even nicer than before..
I love the grumbling noise a v6 or v8 makes.

yeah if u want the car louder then definately get it changed as the vrx's arent loud...just have a nicer note. so by all means change your "muff" for more loudness but dont expect more performance

I have had a 2.5 inch system from the catalytic converter back into twin Magnaflow mufflers. It cost 600 for the system and sounds absolutely awesome. It's quite loud under acceleration, but in neutral at 3,100rpm (SA Transport Regulation Testing Conditions) it comes in about 5 db under the limit. I was so suprised when they tested it, I was sure it wouldnt pass, but luckily without any load on the engine it stays relatively quiet.

Fellas, quick question, does a dual muffer system have any REAL advantages over the traditional single system..
For example, having a dual system running twin 2.5" Magnaflows? or is it just the Wa*k factor and a nice sound??
im interested, weather i should do a nice single or a brillliant dual setup.
Cheers

I'll be honest with you its mostly for cosmetics, unless you have a turbo, no real gains can eb found with a dual over a good single setup.

Personal Preference:
I spose next year im gettin another car for my 'daily' driver, so GBM will be pure sex on wheels, oops, i mean a pure show car.. i think i should go twin setup purely for that 'sex' factor?
it will be coupled with blakes kit, plus a custom bonnet (maybe fibreglass :D:D) plus a wicked interia (not leather, but you will see eventually ;))
would you support my decision, having said that ? :?

if i was going to get a dual system, i'd definately have one to each side of the car!!!
the "louder the better" style shit doesnt turn me on as much as other things, but a rumbly note does... which doesnt come from the exhaust, its from the engine itself! you gotta start playing with cams, timing, induction etc to get a better sound!
