ive got a horse float and im wondering wether anyone has a towbar on their magna, and if it causes issues towing being front wheel drive, and dump the back end, i dont wanna stuff my baby up :(...
if it wont i will install it but if it will im thinking not!..
is it going to really require putting better springs in?

I have it installed but i haven't towed anything because of the fact p platers aren't allowed to. So i'd say it wouldn't cause problems unless you drove the car really hard. You have to accelerate slowly with towing a load on a fwd.

Ive got 19"s and custom superlows and Ive towed a bloody heavy car trailer with a magna wagon on it not a problem.

you need to cut a hole in the centre of the lower skirt on the rear bar for the tow bar to come through as the kit covers the factory towbar hole in the bar. was gonna put one on mine but didn't feel like cutting holes in my kit. also thought about making a plug for the skirt to cover the hole using a standard bar plug. in the end i figured it would be easier to borrow my mates falcon wagon for towing.

My Verada's both have towbars that go underneath the bumper and require no cutting. So I cannot see how a VRX with its smaller bumpers would not be able to have a tow bar without cutting the bumper.
yes hayman reese make a non-intrusive towbar that goes under the skirt. I regularly tow aprox 1600kg 600km+ at a time and it goes fine. Fuel only goes up to about 15L/100km and if you balance the trailer correctly with cruise control you wont know its there. Its no F250 but it will do the job if thats all your asking.

Cut a hole? say what? The bar has a small bit of plastic that pops out for the towbar.
You dont need the cubby hole if you buy the right brand. Its just more work for the installer (=more $). Ive attached a pic of mine

Is it just me or does the bottom of your bar sit really unevenly?

i've got a vrx with towball fitted, tows a 1200kg trailer no problem.
cruise control just gets a little confused sometimes on the highway, but other than that it's been fine

ok, seems noones had any trouble, and thats even better news that u dont have to cut into the kit,... i'm just wondering how much more its going to cost.
And yeh, in that pic it looks as if the bar is sitting really weird at the back...... ????? or am i

ditto looks like the passanger side is pushed up from underneath.
also you can get them square looking towbars that you can remove easily when not using. the ones that stick out makes the back look ugly.
something like this will be good for a VRX or Ralliart

Mine had done some towing of a horse float before i bought it...i dont know how much or how hard.
However last year 2nd gear on my gearbox went down, and i had to replace the whole box.
the guys reckon the horse float towing would have killed it, though it took at least 25-30K more k's for it to happen

VRX rear skirt sits on top of and below the original Magna rear bar, however the VRX rear skirt has no provision for towbars, unlike the standard rear bar.
The result is taking to the VRX rear skirt with a jigsaw.

The previous owner of mine had a bit made up to cover the hole after he took the big ugly towbar off. Still have it in the boot, but if I need to tow I just use to wife's rada.

I have a hayman reese towbar, ive only towed a box trailer with a motorbike in it, did it fine.
My bar is cut slightly, abit annoying cause i cant take the towbar off now.

With my TE there is a hole that i popped out to fit mine.
The only issue with having it come out from under the bar is clearance if your cars low.
Mine was pretty low and it lookes allot neater coming out from the bumper. Its not as intrusive.
On the other hand i wouldnt wanna chop a rear bar if there wasnt a plug like in the TE's
Just something to keep in mind.

Ive hit my towbar on driveways many times, but id rather it be the towbar than the bodykit or exhaust.:D

I have a Mitsu one on mine. sits below the bumper and is covered by a plastic sheath.
it came with the car, so I'm not sure how much it cost, but it's probably pretty spendy.
cheers,

at least if its hitting the towbar, then its not damaging the body panels!
if you want a nice clean looking install - maybe think about going to mitsu and getting a factory / OEM one put on (but buying a factory one might cost extra $$$ coz of the badge..)
personally, iv never had a towbar put on a car with a body kit of any sorts...
they do look better when they can be removed when not in use, and dont go under the rear bar - but if you dont want to cut it up.. then you get stuck with it going under...
ive just had a towbar put on my vrx. Bought it second hand, its a hayman reese bar, i think the part number is 1981 (for those playing along at home, and i know you are) for $70 off ebay. Local exhaust place in laverton north put it in, had to cut a small part out of the kit but that's fine.
Only 2 things tho. 1) where he cut you can see the white of the inside of the bar, might touch that up and 2) he gave us the electrical connector that was round and sits in your boot so it has to hang out the lid thereby scratching your bumper when you use it. I think ill replace it with a flat one and mount it underneath. I keep the tounge on all the time so if anyone rear ends me, they wont be driving off.
bar = $70
fitting = $90

My KH Verada came with a towbar that didn't cut into the bumper. Removed the bar that sticks out of the back with the ball in it and you wouldn't know it had been there. Can be put back on in a few mins too.
Took it off a few days after buying the car (ugly!) so never towed anything with it. Good to have it though just in case.

thanks but the veradas seem to be able to have a tow bar on that doesnt cut the bar the vrx has that body kit extra and is different, i twill have to cut into the back sadly.
i think im going to need a really good tow bar that can tow up to 1600-1800.one thats secure and not just added on with a couple of bolts. my horse weighs about 600kgs or so alone!:(

Is it legal to tow more than your car weighs?

The strongest bar you will get for a 3rd gen is 1500kg towing weight, with 150kg ball weight. The ball weight is how much down-force weight the towbar can take. For a horse float you will want this towbar, and some stabilisers (about $150) which will help put more weight back onto the front wheels, which is handy for braking, steering and stuff!!
I just had the Hayman Reese towbar installed (part No. 1982, yes I'm playing along at home too!!) which I got supplied, installed and wired for $309. the HR1982 is a good bar, as they use double the amount of bolts to attach it to the car than others I've seen. Make sure you know what part number you want first, then do some ringing around, I found a large variations in quotes
I've been towing a large caravan (prolly 1200kgs loaded) and the magna is a great tower, especially with the stabiliser bars. I happened to tow the same caravan with a late model commodore recently, and I can say that the magna handles a lot better. The engine seemed not to labour as much, and it just seems more stable on the road.
having said that though, I tried taking some hills at full speed (love company fuel cards!!) and the temp guage went up a couple of notches. still I was impressed that the magna could maintain 105km/h with the caravan on some good size hills

The magna gags for it.

Dunno how I'd feel about lugging 1800kg around behind it though. Would be a slightly skittish, very illegal ride. I know I certainly wouldn't be comfortable towing anything more than a mid size ski boat around with one.

An article I read before buying my Verada said a lot of Magnas had been used as tow cars, so they must be pretty good!

ok i guess the horse float isnt as much as i thought, its meant to weigh according to the plate on trailer, around 2000 with two horses in it.
it will be 1000 max, and my horse is prob closer to the 500kg mark im hoping. So hopefully the max id be towing is 1500-1600kg, if that. Still alot of weight i guess...for poor magna. hopefully will only be towing local not up many hills!
