man this is pissing me off...
Im blowing interior light fuses....and i have NFI why.
Ill be quick and short.
Driving along the monash, hit a small pothole, i hear a click and i blow a fuse (CD player and amps and interior lighting turn off)
Get home, replace the fuse, all good.
Now this has happened one more time except it blew the fuse again 5 minutes later when i hit another small hole.
SO I went checking for shorts and the like.
Ripped off the roof lining, all wires in tact there.
Gauge Pillar...some wires exposed, so i covered them up.
Centre console has all been taken out, and no signs of loose wires or anything there either.
So one by one ive disconnected things and then inserted a fuse to see if it was that...so taken off the interior light, still blew, neons, still blew, CD player and TV, still blew....
Im still yet to do a complete check under the drivers footwell yet but besides re-running all my wiring again what the hell can i do to check where it could possibly be shorting?
I dont think it can have anything to do with my power windows install as its in its own circuit and ive had this problem happen before i installed the electrics
And pretty much besides all of my own wiring up the front of the car, the only things ive done throughout the car electrics wise is the stereo installation. And i know thats not the cause.
Sucks not having music
Any help welcomed
Davo!

I dont know much about electronics, but could it be something like an earth comming loose when you hit potholes or something? would that cuase a power surge or anything that would pop a fuse?

can you divert the radio to another fuse
check the earthing points again
need a multi meter to read the load on that circuit across the fuse pins

you could have too many thngs running of that line of power

What is the value of the fuse?

i had a similar problem paulina.
Goto jaycar (or similar) and get a heaps heavier fuse.
although if its when you hit potholes its more likely something to do with bodgy wiring somewhere

Putting a heavier fuse is a bad idea, because then the wiring can set fire, there is a reason those wires have the fuse rating they do.
Unplug everything, and see if it still blows, if not reconnect things one by one and find the culprit.

DON'T replace fuses for larger fuses BIG no no
The fuses are there to protect the wire, not the load.
You have a short, or are overloading something somewhere.
Check wiring, neaten up connections, replace wiring if necessary with new runs. and fuse appropriately

hahahaha in my valiant i keept blowing a fuse..... it only had 2!!! lol
anyway it's blow every hour on the hour.... well felt like it anyway
late one night ran out of fuses i had heaps spare but used them all up, middle of no where.... stuck a screwdriver in the fusr holder (rember 40yo car here not modern type fuse) yeah worked fine till it kept falling out cos it was too heavy.....
so put a screw in there instead.... that'll fit it, sure did.... it also metled through the floor mat and the carpet when it fell out
lucky the car didnt burn down hahaha
dont rember what the problem turned out to be, cos the entire loom burnt down one day... not due to being dodgey lol but the inhibitor switch on the trans shorted.... $600 later it was good as new....
so my post is of no help lol sorry..... how about a auto sparky checking it over, cos your blowing fuses all over the place

oops.
my inline fuse for my amp kept blowing everytime i cranked it. Bad idea for getting a highger amp one?

Wire Gauge - Fuse Size
2/0 gauge - 430 amps
0 gauge - 345 amps
1 gauge - 265 amps
2 gauge - 215 amps
4 gauge - 135 amps
6 gauge - 80 amps
8 gauge - 55 amps
10 gauge - 30 amps
12 gauge - 20 amps
14 gauge - 15 amps
16 gauge - 7.5 amps
Refer to that. If your cable is fine for the current you can go upto that limit. Always best to keep the fuse smaller if possible. (as long as you're not always blowing them)
With stock wiring i suggest you never replace it for a bigger fuse. The stock wiring is designed to standards and should work fine. Once you start playing with it u open up pandoras box. Electrical problems are hard to track down.
Peace

Exactly, Im not replacing it with a bigger fuse if this one never blew.
Well now my gauges dont light up (used to light up) So im gonna rip stuff apart tomorrow and see what happens.
Thing is now i cant even put a fuse in! Cause as soon as it connects it blows right away!

Think i found the problem.
Ripped out my gauges (Damn my inner rice) and now she doesnt blow fuses.
Lesson - install gauges properly lol
Edit*
FFS. Well that wasnt it. Cause its still blowing them.

Thats just how its meant to be man, fills you with hopes then comes back to bite you in the ****.
You could just rip everything out and re-wire the whole lot? Pain in the **** but that'd do the trick perhaps.
Gonna pull the dash out now like gav suggested?

F**k no. not doing that.....
i know theres a short somewhere, and its not in the dash. if thats a 1st gen problem like he said then its a 1st gen problem
lol
So how'd you go anyway, spent the whole day on it, must have got something out of it? Plz update us!:P

I've now Disconnected everything I've installed into this car.
Interior L.E.D's/gauges/Interior lights, and as soon as i put a fuse in, pop it goes.
Would the 2 LED sticks in my boot have anything to do with it? even though they only come on when the boot is popped...
man my interior is a shambles atm :(
Hey I have an idea, check the boot light!:P

Ah if only i replied first before you telling you...
Was a short on the boot light.
Checked everything ELSE BESIDES THE BOOT and that was it...
ffs...

hahahaha, go car electronics!!!
So the boot light was causing all those probs with ur power windows, stereo and gauges????
Dang

you have a boot light?
Magna91
16-10-2007, 08:03 PM
Damn! Seems to be common on the second gens as well, boot light in ours went as well but it was draining the battery, didn't blow any fuses though.
Ah well with that done, time to reassemble... good luck with that.

I have 2 LED sticks hooked up to the boot light in the boot. And one was stuck under the false floor where i so dodgily hooked it up (Twisted the wires together and taped it) and was earthing there.
never had a problem with my boot light though.
and micheal, no the power windows was a different f*** up :)

Godd damn paul!! You suck so much that i wanna slappa you across the face!! :bowrofl:
Its called a soldering iron....
Can a mod or admin please put "Resident Ricer" under this guys username lol Thanks.

Haha and you know why? Because only a fool would keep looking after they found the problem! lol
Don't be dodgy with installing stuff pauly, do it right haha.

They are actually LED sticks. Much more cooler then neons
They shall be staying.
Either that or the boot cops my 2 UV CCFL's and 2 blue CCFL Tubes from my old riced up computer tower......With sound sensors and all :bowrofl:
So have you wired them up so they come on when you open the boot? Hows that work exactly? Just tap into the boot lights wiring?

Tisk tisk, you should be running a fused relay :P

Tisk tisk, you should be running a fused relay :P
not when its via the stock wiring :P
Says he who connects up power windows install DIRECT to the battery with NO fuse and melts ALL wiring on his switch...:bowrofl:
and people say IM dodgey!
Mrmacomouto
17-10-2007, 10:40 PM
The switch was dodgey, the wiring was fine.
The whole system works one day and then almost catches fire at the switch the next.
