Hey all,

upgrading the speakers in the TJ VRX and got a couple of questions...

i have already put new kicker 6x9 rears in the back and they sound quite nice...
next question is installing a HU into the front...
*Tim edit: no ebay links in forum - use ebay only thread*
is what i am looking at but i don't want to have to make any modifications to the standard silver plate over the top.... also i am sure i will most likely lose the ability to control the indash stacker? is there any brand that can make use of the standard CD stacker?
will it fit straight in if i don't install the facia plate?
or will it leave a gap around the HU from the original?

Also with the doors there are standard splits in the doors... i am looking to also upgrade those as they are not the best in the world.... only problem is i don't want to modify the tweeter below the A pillar, so i will be mainly upgrading the mid/low in the door.
are the splits in the doors wired with a split box or standard split wiring?

Thanks

I am also keen to replace the front speaker set in my car but i haven't found any speakers that split three ways seperately (front door lower, tweeter on door & top of the dash). In response to the stacker, i had a factory stacker (eurovox) in my car and was told i couldn't use it with the new head unit (pioneer AVH-P6850) i had installed. However, as the unit has an in-built stacker i was OK with that. I believe though that alpine has a system where any adapter plug could be used for things like steering wheel remotes and bluetooth & stackers etc (i had a look at alpine strongly before buying the pioneer).
Good Luck

i helped install a similar alpine unit into someones else's car once. It fit but it sort of stuck out a little bit, not sure if that would faise you or not

when installing the new deck your going to have to make sure that its sticking out alittle bit so you can put the silver surround on, cause if you dont the gap around the deck looks terrible
as for the stacker im pretty sure the alpine h/u has an input for a stacker but i am not sure if the indash stacker has the correct input

as for the speakers in the front doors, i dont think you'll have splits in there so it'll just be the wooffer,
you can get some verada tweeter pods if you wanna keep the install stock looking, these replace the black triangle bit where the side mirrors are on the door
there will not be any cross overs for the stock speakers

stock cd changer wont plug into anything, just replace it with a pocket :)

nope TJ VRX's, Sports (i think) and KJ Veradas all had splits at the front, just the KJ was the only one to get the mids (purely just referring to the *J series here, not earlier or later :P ). I think the stock woofers need an adapter plate made up tho to suit the new splits.

1 idea to the OP may be to install the HU, then install the splits later, as i've found its very easy to live with the stock splits when a different HU is installed, and the equalizer and settings properly setup. imo the stock HU is the weak point of the system (using the KJ speaker setup as my basis).
just give it a shot for a week :)

I had the same issue when replacing my TJ's headunit with an aftermarket Pioneer unit. There's an easy solution - just drill new screw holes into the car's headunit cradle. My mate and I guesstimated the position of the holes, and it turned out nicely.

An upgraded headunit makes the world of difference!
I've put up with my Alpine driving my standard speakers (KH Verada) for almost a year, and i'm just starting to look at adding a subwoofer to the worx so I can relieve the other speakers of the hard work of the low frequencies lol

Here is a pic or three of my Alpine headunit, with factory pocket installed underneath.

I found the same problem with my old Barina. I replaced the stock speakers (6" in front, 4" in back) with some Sony's (6" front, 6x9 back) and it sounded better, then I replaced the HU and WOW!

HU can be a big bottleneck.
