Hello all,

I'm sure someone have done this before, what is a list of items that needs to be changed when you change a 3.0L to 3.5L on an Automatic Magna?

I have so far:
1) ECU
2) Engine Loom

In terms of the transmission, will the 3.0L auto be alright for the extra torque with the 3.5L?

thanks in advance

engine :D

see phonics thread he made i believe it has some info

put a manual in there at the same time! 2 Birds 1 stone!

All you really need is the motor and an interceptor (piggyback) ECU to correct the air/fuel ratios and ignition timing. The 3.0 ECU will have no problem in running the 3.5 with the corrected mixtures and timing. :P

is a 3.5 L ecu a straight plug in?

how much did it set you back phonic for the engine? ? did you find a low km 2nd hand one or a reconditioned one?

My car is automatic, a manual conversion is definately something I'm considering. It all comes down to how much money I want to throw at it, it also means longer time in the workshop. Which I really don't want to wait too long for.

hmm I need to know what the mechanics say about engine prices first. then I'll ask about the manual conversion.

Not sure if it's stright plug in, but you will need the matching BEM to suit the ECU, so sticking with your current ECU is easier.

I picked up a 2nd hand unit from a member on these forums, cost me $400 for the motor, only problem with it was a couple stuffed injectors (strange for a supposedly 50K motor lol ) and some leaky gaskets. I spent probably another $300 on gaskets, plugs, new injectors etc. (all easy to do yourself with the motor out of the car:P ).

If you get your hands on a TJ Sports/VRX or TJII exec motor, I have a complete Auto ECU, BEM and engine wiring harness for one left over from the conversion.

Arh, can you please pm me your contact, i might get in touch with you if the mechanic finds me an engine that meets your spare ECU.

Cheers

Just rang the mechanic, he said the 3.0L to 3.5L conversion requires a change of gear box, drive shafts, ECU and Loom which will require the dash to be taken out. Hence more labour, more money.

I'm going to find out what the prices are tomorrow.

Rubbish, the mechanic is talkin crap. The 3.0 flywheel should bolt up to the 3.5 motor, they are no longer, or shorter and the gearboxes are the same, except for the 1st gear ratio in the manuals.

Yes but the 3.0L Auto has a different final drive ratio than the 3.5L Auto.

thats crap, the 3litre gearbox, driveshafts, ecu and loom can all be used in either the 3l or the 3.5. Although if you change from auto to manual the gearbox and driveshafts will have to be changed. but still auto 3l and auto 3.5l are the same as are manual 3l and manual 3.5l

theres a member I know who is still using the 3l auto computer and loom on a 3.5 manual.

3.0L Auto Final Drive Ratio: 3.735:1
3.5L Auto Final Drive Ratio: 3.497:1

The same.............IN MY PANTS!

Also the Manual 3.5's have a "strengthened" gearbox, dont ask me how/where though. Linky. (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40682)

"Again, the Magna Sports was sold with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed Sports Mode sequential auto. Interestingly, the TH Sports uses a stronger manual ‘box than in the TF – we believe that it’s the TF manual’s relative lack of gearbox strength that prevented initial use of the big 3.5."

that being said, he will still be doing the same engine revs/kmh as before the engine conversion. I have a 3.5 auto box for sale if you want it. I think its out of a th sports??

I just realised you have a 4 speed auto, I'm not sure this TJ Sports ECU will run the box?

Cheers guys, my first priority at the moment is to get the car back on the road for as little and as soon as possible.

As for 3 to 3.5 conversion and auto to manual conversion, I treat them as minor bonus if the additional cost was not going to blow me out of the water. But it turns out that it will cost a fair bit more in labour and parts.

So, I've decided to go with a 3.0, it's done about 100000, they will redo the timing belts and what have you part of the install. parts and labour $2.6k, they are doing mine as first priority and will have it back to me hopefully Wed next week. That's what sold it for me, the time they can do it in.

Once again guys, thanks for all your input.

what are you doing for 2.6K? my major service only cost me like couple hundred, ill check if you like what they did, and that included timing belt.

This is a complete Engine replacement.

Sorry I never mentioned that my engine broke a conrod bearing.
