Hi All

Does anyone else find that their TR drives a lot worse in the hot weather? Mine never used to be too bad but on a day like today (30 degrees +) Im finding that when I am at the traffic lights or am stopped for anything over about a minute, the revs go from 700rpm to 500/400 and I stall. It only happens in hot weather, on a cold/mild day Im fine. Im guess the old engine isnt coping too well in the heat. And I dont have the AC on, I havent been able to use it for years as as soon as I switch it on, it also cuts out the motor too.

I also find that when I slow down the car chugs or shudders a lot. The revs dont seem to drop so much though

Hubby adjusted the idle screw for me and it improved for about a week and then it started dropping again

Is there anything I can do or is this just a typical old Magna problem? She is 17 years old this year but has only done 165,000 and has otherwise been very good mechanically

Thanks for reading

Kate

Have you checked that the thermo fan is kicking in when the cars warm and your idling?

My old TR used to be a pig like this, but it wouldnt stall, it'd just idle really strange on hot days. The relay for the fan was screwed and I replaced it and the problem got alot better.

From what I understand it has something to do with the hot air and having a busted/dying idle speed control motor. Opposite effect of a cold air intake and because there is nothing to step up the revs it just drops off. Mine Idles about 150ish less on REALLY hot days.

You need to double check the radiator fans/hoses/thermo/new cap all very cheap too replace and always a good idea before a very hot summer.

The ISC sounds like its shonky, if you have never replaced it I suggest having a look at it, think its about $100 from bursons. Hopefully the TPS is fine also, I know this can also cause alot of issues if its not clicking properly side to side.

So yeah, first check condition of cooling system, then check the ISC. Mine was set far too low thats why it was stalling, adjusted it, and its been fine ever since.

Got rid of the typical mitsubishi vibrations better also.

Good luck with it.

p.s be careful when adjusting the idle rate, the higher the idle the more fuel consumption.

Thanks guys

Yeah the fan def kicks in, I can hear it over my music! I'll get my man to check the other stuff for me. I did have a prob with the radiator cap popping off while I was driving last summer, the temp went up immediately and water pissed out everywhere. The RAA came and replaced it for me and checked all the hoses etc and said it seems fine.

I figured the chugging/vibrations etc were just an "old car" thing but if there is a something I can do to improve it then Im all for it

Cheers
