View Full Version : Rough Idle after Gearbox done?

Just got my car back from getting a new clutch and the gearbox rebuilt and there seems to be a rough spot in the idle between 2krpm and 2.5krpm.

when I first drove it home the car would not stop stalling. Every time I dipped the clutch, it would stall. Got home, went to show the old man and it stopped the stalling, but seems to be running a little rough between the rev range...

any ideas what could be the problem?

I'm quite annoyed at this seeing as it just cost me $2500 for the box and $800 for the major service last week...

aren't you supposed to run it in? drive it softly or something?

yeah he said to take it easy on the clutch so the clutch beds in properly....but it was extremely difficult to actually even drive soft with the car stalling everytime the clutch was dipped.

the stalling seems to have stopped....just seems rough when idling...

maybe the clutch and flywheel need to match itself up, similar to how brake pads and discs need to wear each other down to a similar pattern in order to make full contact

what kind of clutch did u get?

pretty sure it was and Exedy clutch but not 100% sure.

ill drive it around for a bit and see if it settles down. if not ill take it back and see what they say.

Perhaps they had the battery disconnected, and now the ECU is "relearning".

yeah well they did have it disconnected so thats what i was thinking.

would it run rough while in the ''learning'' process? any idea how long the process lasts? couple of Km's....hours...days....tanks of fuel lol???

It depends on how long it idles, starts, and such. I Just found out my Ecu was reset when it was put on gas, it idles roughly at 800 and is sluggish around the 40km mark just give it a few days it should improve.

should i disconnect the battery again, then reconnect it and let it idle for a while or will that not do anything? or should i just leave it be for a while?

Just leave it keep driving it. One thing that might help is let it warm up for a few mins before you start driving.

Stop ripping burnouts Anth!! Simple. lol

Nah it sounds right mate, don't forget you have just changed the whole gearbox to a brand new one, so everything is kinda "bedding" in. If the problem doesn't fix itself disconnect the battery, reconnect it, set the trip computer to 3.5L Wagon and let it idle for 10 minutes or so. Not too sure if that makes a difference on the manual but maybe it stalls cause your ECU is confused about where idle should be.

If it keeps on stalling after 500km or so, take it back.
