hey all
had a search around before posting - but the amount of hits that "auto" and "headlights" get is unbelievable!!!
anyhow
my old 2006 Hyundai Elantra had 'semi auto' headlights, where they would turn off to parkers when you switched the engine off, and turn the parkers off when you remove the key. When you put the key back in the ignition (without touching the headlight stalk) they would turn back to parkers and then turn on the low beams when the car was running.
also - the others halfs old car, a VZ Calais used to have the full auto / light sensing headlights as well.
what i loved best about the VZ (in this regard anyhow) was that if you turned the lights "on" manually, you could lock the car and they would stay on for about 30seconds or so and then off.
When you unlocked the car - the headlights would come on automatically for you.
i found in particular the Calias lights to be very handy when going back to the car at night with no other lights around.
also handy for getting into the house when you forget to leave a light on outside before you go out! lol
is there any way to rig a setup similar to that of the calais headlights (not nec the light sensing auto headlights part) but the "remaining on" for 30seconds or so when you shut the car down, locked it and is trying to get into the house.
hope that makes sence?
(when i wanted to do this to my old elantra, the forum i was on said it was possible, but prolly easier to go buy said calais for that feature - being that hyundai are crap lol)
also - with the calais, if you unlocked it (lights come on for you) and then locked it again without starting it or opening the door, the lights would go straight off and not remain on for the time period.
open to all ideas, suggestions and opinions.
i think it would be a rather nice little touch for the rada personally :)

I do know that there's a light-sensing kit that you can buy from supercheap auto that turns your lights on when it's dark, off when it's light or when the key is pulled from the ignition. don't know if there's an aftermarket kit that does it.
P.S- The new calais' has got the whole "parking find" feature covered. it bombards everyone with extreme amounts of lights when you unlock the doors at night. (Full beam headlights, fog lights, Rear brake lights and reverse lamps-all of which are exceptionally bright!)

I'm pretty sure that in my KJ when you have the keys out of the ignition, you can flick the headlight stalk towards yourself for a second which turns the headlights on for around 30 seconds. I'm not sure if this feature is standard across all 3rd Gen models or not?

ima go out to the car and check that right now to see if it works on the KL.
*EDIT - nope, they didnt stay on.
(and i think the neighbours over the road are a lil unsure why i am flashing thier house at nearly 12.30 in the morning! lol)
tried it with the door open, and with the door shut too.

i didnt think that they needed to add EXTRA lighting for the parking find thing!
i was more than happy with the lights coming on as you left them - always drove with the lights on - even during the day, and 9 times outa 10 had the driving / foggies on as well.
the VZ wasnt short of lighting IMO.. thats for sure - esp with the Xenon (spelling) lights!!!

I just tested it on my KJ and it worked! I turned the engine on, turned it off, removed the key out of the ignition and flicked the headlight stalk towards me before opening the door and the headlights stayed on for around 30 secs.
You have to flick the headlight stalk towards you all the way until you feel the click for the high beam and only then release it. If this doesn't work in your Verada then maybe this feature was deleted from the KL onwards?
EDIT: haha i have nothing better to do early on a Saturday morning than to test the hidden features of my car! :P

dont feel too bad about it - as im running back and forth from the rada to check.
il go back out to it and try it again.
did you turn the lights "on" with the engine running, then turn them off once you shut it down and then "click the stalk"?
sorry for n00bish question there - but wanna try to reproduce this to check it on my car :)

I didn't turn the headlights on, only tried it with the headlights off.

YES!
Mine does it too! :) :)
i think i went wrong with my first test by not starting the car first - i just got in it and clicked the stalk. i also had the door open when i did it.
*EDIT - when it worked, i had to get outa the car to check, and i locked it - and was suddenly unsure if it would set the alarm off or if they would even turn off. i was happy that the alarm DIDNT go off, and that the lights went off on thier own. lol
cool, so the car has a timer of sorts in there - so thats a start for making it more "VZ Paking finder"
is it possible to set this current found feature to "low beam only?"
as i got high beams going too
my foggies / driving lights came on too with it.
cool - so the car is about 1/3rd closer to what i want.
would be cool if they came on by themselves when unlocking the car, and turn off by themselves 30seconds after locking / shutting the car down.
i know i know - im picky, but i like little cool feature things like this :)

I've got a TJ VRX, and it's the same for me. Except, I don't think mine turn off after 30 seconds.........I usually just put the ignition on again and they swtich off. I'm too inpatient to wait.

i have a TJ awd and it in the manual!
filck the high beams and the lights stay on for 30 sec then turn off
i have only ever used it to show ppl WOW how cool is this, just like Video calls on your mobile for me a novelty been with 3 for years and only made 2 genuine ones hahahaha
i believe in the better spec cars you can even program the delay to be more or less than 30 sec

Mine does it too which is handy I guess. Here is what it says in the manual: 'Headlight off delay - Within 15 seconds of turning the ignition off, flash the headlights for less than 5 seconds using the flash lever (pull to position 2) and the headlights will illuminate for 30 seconds. The headlights will illuminate in low or high beam, whichever was selected when the ignition was turned off. The on-time can be extended further if the flash lever is pulled back and held for more than 5 seconds. The on-time will be equivalent to the length of time the lever is held back and the time can be varied from a minimum of 15 seconds to a maximum of 5 minutes.'What they should have though is an auto on/off function for the headlights instead of the buzzer and a programmable delay which you can set and forget instead of having to carry out the above procedure each time you want to keep the headlights on after locking the car.

So if I want 5:30 minutes of action I have to sit there flashing the light for 5 mins before getting out of the car? Wow how far we have come...

surely its got to be possible to allow the lights to be auto on and delay off, seeing as they already have the provision for a manual style delay for the lights to stay on.
im not really that electroniclly minded to be able to get it all organised personally.
but i would imagine that it could be wired into the central locking for when you unlock the car for the lights to return to thier previous position (often on)
and some sort of delay for when the car has been shut down with the lights still on when you have walked away and locked it.
Mine park assist headlight works.
Anyhow, in my KS, I bought a device from Traxide Tronics (http://www.traxide.com.au/) (they are in brisbane) and got an
auto sparky to fit it. I've mentioned on here before what it does but here is the gist of it:
1. Switching it off, it acts as a lights on reminder.
2. Switching it on:
a. Leaving the light stalk switched off, lights will turn on (at 70-80% power) 10 seconds
after ignition (battery protection) and turns off when ignition is off.
b. Turning the light stalk on, turns on lights to 100% power.
c. Turning the light stalk off after turning the engine off leave the lights on for 30 seconds.
Its a pity Traxide Tronics no longer make that product

lol that would be just my luck wouldnt it!
Is there anything that can be rigged up at home that will do the same sort of effect?

Missks has my old ks now. PM her to see if she still has the unit. Tell her it was attached
under the steering wheel (just left of the steering wheel) so that the toggle was visible.
Perhaps she can get some electronics whiz to see what is required to produce some more.

was just thinking,
would there be a way to hook up for auto lights to the interior light in some way?
coz like, when you unlock the car, the interior light comes ON and if the lights where left in the 'on; position when getting out the car, they would come on with the interior light too.
problem with that might be the interior light fading out the headlights might do the same...
and when locking the car before the interior light has had a chance to stay on and fade out, would kill the lighting.
i know - it sounds like a very rough desciption - i know what i want in my head, its just getting it into writting! lol
