Hi Guys / Gals

thought i would post up some pics just finished one side of colour coding my 98 TF

cost me $115 for all the paint, sandpaper, clear coat and primer
I just went to autobarn and gave them my paint code they made it up for me in some spray cans also got some 400 grit sandpaper and i got one can of plastic primer and one can of top clear coat and a lot of masking tape

Step 1 put Mask of around the section you would like to paint

Step 2 Sand back the part you intend to paint

Step 3 give the part you are painting a lite coat of plastic primer then give it a lite sandback repeat this process two more times

Step 4 Give the car one last coat of primer

Step 5 Put first coat of colour code paint down then lite sandback then apply 3 more coats of colour code if needed give a lite sandback (only if needed)

Step 6 when you are happy with the result give it three coats off Top clear coat this will ensure a nice shine finish

Wants Needed and Price

Colour code paint $28 a can i needed three
Sandpaper $1 a sheet needed 4
Masking tape $10 get a really thick roll
Plastic Primer $12.50 a can needed 1 can
Top clear coar $15 a can needed 1 can

This took me around 5 hours to do so not a lot of time for a great result

My favourite part is the mirror how the black stip has been coded. Looks pimp in the flesh, thinking about getting it done to the KJ. After I get some KL door handles first.

looking good :)

but yes, higher quality pics so we can really see the improvement.

i could never understand the lower half of the cars not getting colour coded paint from factory!! i spose tho.. its to differentiate the lower model cars from the top of the range cars...

Love the colour coding and the clear repeaters.:)

Why on earth would you colour code the mudflaps, though?

Very nice Job. Just what I've been planning to do to my TJ.
Care to elaborate on what paints/preparation you used?

Well following BJ31OS's footsteps I went down to Autobarn today to get them to mix up some aerosol spray cans for me.
First hurdle, finding the paint code. Took ages to find it, apparently it was a trial colour by Mitsubishi.
Eventually spoke to a PPG paint rep, found out it's Cocoon White, code: KA. Joy :D
The Guy at Autobarn mixed the paint but it didn't work. Came out too thick to spray properly in the aerosol can and he didn't want to add any extra thinners.
I'll hunt around tomorrow and see if anyone else can mix the stuff properly.

any decent paint place should be able to do it for you

or go back to autobarn and tell them to follow the instructions properly of the different amounts of paint and it will work .

How resilient is the painted finish? Can it handle high pressure washing?

BJ31OS

just wondering what grade paper did you use for the sanding back of the mirrors etc. And where did you get the grill insert for you car or was that part of the body kit?

Magnamaniac
11-01-2008, 03:53 PM
disregard question about sandpaper grade. I just reread your post properly; 400 grit.

would this mod work on door handles? or would it scratch dodgyly? and how about 1200 grit for a smoother finish?

Man, that looks so much better!

I'd do mine but ... it was already done, being a Solara. ;)

Minus the mirror surrounds tho ... have been pondering doing something like that actually ... hmmm.

looks good.

When you adjust your mirors though do you have unpainted bits on the inside.
Not that you really notice it but i had the same problem.

TOP JOB
