Hi all,
Before y'all shoot me down-did a search it came up with two responses that didn't give any real answers.
I was just wondering about people's experiences with repainting or dying their interior. By this I mean door trims and dashboard. Not any hard plastics as they would probably never soak up anything. Any suggestions on products to use? Any positive/negative experiences??
Thanks in advance,
-Ian

good surface preperation is the key
take your time, do it right and it will look good and last!
use correct products Vinyl spraypaint is designed to stick to the surface and wear well....
try going for something semi decent (a bit hard though as all the chain stores sell the same cheap crap, VHT is ok but there is betters out there SEM is better but 2x the price)

Please elaborate...what is VHT and SEM...lol i'm a noob-i know! Also, what's the "surface preparation" entail? What would I have to do to properly prepare the surfaces to be painted?

they are brands of Viny spray.... VHT is sold at autobarn etc...
surface prep depends on what your painting...
i have completley sprayed a vinyl interir before, changed from brown to charcoal and it lasted 2 years without any hassles no fading/peeling/scratching off etc...
i wont go into how to do it though as i have no attention to detail and i rush jobs and do a sucky job
but kets say you were to spray a vinyl seat, clean it with prepsol make sure it all good clean and dry then go nuts (thats how i paint) but it would work better if you take your time and follow the directions on the can
vinyl spray is flexable and the ones i have used before havent required a plastic primer to get them to stick and stay stuck!
what exactly do you wanna paint? it can be done professinaly and in some cases cheaper than if you done it yourself.... i just had everything console window switches dash instrument insert and surround and more painted in 2k black for $80!

Dot spray vynal seats they will wear off.
I would take it to a pro to get done so you can at least get a warranty.
Wouldn't be repainting my interior myself but thats just my OP.

i worked in the industry for 5 years and i can assure you that leather and vinyl seats can be repainted and you wouldnt be able to tell and they also would wear out...

I'm in the process of changing my interior using VHT vinyl dye right now. About 18 months ago I sprayed the console cover (cushioned top between the front seats) and I must say it's held up pretty well. A couple of weeks ago I sprayed the door trims and didn't wait long enough for it to dry. That's a bad thing! One of the trims has a decent scratch in it which I have to fix.
Moral to the story: prep and light coats are key, but so is drying, so wait for the right weather and give yourself some time to do it right.
Cheers,
.Wook

What i'm planning on painting is the soft part (top-half) of the dashboard and the door trims. I've no intention spraying seats- just dashboard bits.I am planning to send all of my centre-console/dashboard trim off for "piano black" treatment soon.

i have only had experience with VHT paints/ dyes.
the VHT one, im told isnt a paint, its more of a DYE - ie itl soak into the surface so it will avoid wearing off a little better than a paint would.
when i painted my black vnyle door cards with a funky red insert, i did 3 even coats with plenty of drying time between each coat.
i finished it off with a coat of armorall too - for good measure im sure.
heres my finished product for a bit of inspiration (and yes.. it is a Daewoo LANOS !?)

sweet deal, I think i'll end up dying my whole interior charcoal or black. Thanks for the replies guys.
I'm assuming that the "VHT" brand is the better one?
