I was just pondering....

We are all after more HP, well the easiest way is to reduce the mass of the car.

I'll leave this for all to discuss, What can we REMOVE 'LEGALLY' to get a better power to wieght ratio????????????

Apart from the obvious, spare tyre and carp floatin in your car....

Sweet **** all really... Unless a CF bonnet is on the cards and actually legal.

Change your seats over to third gen seats too, they are lighter than stock second gen seats.

drive that around.

short answer, theres not much you can do legally to make your car lighter. basically look for parts on your engine that serve no purpose. you could remove power windows motors if you have them fitted. i can't think of much.

check your state laws but in some states CF bonnets are illegal. but you could always modify a GTR bonnet to fit. they are alloy and light as hell. the first time i opened a GTR bonnet i nearly threw it over the roof of the car.

you could take out all the trims that you don't need. pull out the carpet in your boot and all the plastic mouldings. keep your spare tyre as it is a legal requirement. never fill your fuel tank above half way.

also run skinny rear tyres. they will give you less rolling resistance (not sure on legality of that though)

If you really wanted, you could rip out the rear seats and seat belts etc. Then you could re-register the car as a two seater.

Realistically, there is nothing much you can do on the cheap.

Not true in Victoria, you can fail roadworthy for having a bald or flat spare tyre but can pass without a spare tyre at all.

Here's all the stuff you can remove where there is no legislation saying you have to have it on the car to register it :
power window motors (go back to manual winders)
door cards
air conditioning system (VERY heavy)
sound system
headlining
centre console
carpets
switch front seats to carbon shell seats
battery box
rear wing/body kit
body side protection strips
plastic wheelarch liners
exhaust heat shields

Oh, wait. We have just turned our car into a stripped out race car minus roll cage. We have also turned it into a noisy, ugly, hot, nasty piece of kit. Which begs the question - why bother...

Agreed!

I read an article about an EG Civic some while ago which had been completely gutted. no back seat, carpet, roof lining, spare wheel, air con, power steering, sound system, plastic mouldings, etc. as well as carbon fiber bonnet and stuff like that.

needless to say, the engine, drivetrain, etc. had a lot of work done and the power to weight ratio outclassed the GTRs, EVOs, etc.

there really isn't much you can do if you want a comfy street car, but if your going for the race car thing i guess you could strip your interior to shave a bit of weight :P

Replace power windows with winders.
Foam filled doors (involves removing door trim completely)
Remove all carpeting

sit nice and low on your seat so that the light particals coming through the windscreen aren't slowed down at all. every millisecond counts. and make sure to polish you car all the time so the air slides over the car easilly.

so i can take the plastic liners out from under my frount guards legally?

Thats one less thing to engineer.

theres lots of stuff between the plastic liners and the wheel arch you can 9" out. Just be sure to paint all the silver bits black when your done and not to cut anything to structual.

There seems to be alot of sacasm, but i think It can benifit all of us, that are concerned with the thirst of a seccond gen. And not to mention the lack of 2 cams.... So every little bit helps when you are on the wrong side of the road overtaking...:gtfo:
Pure everyday things we can all do that wont cost an arm, and doesn't need an engineer.

Air con removal has been high on the list for my last cars being old and diddnt really work any ways. Even removal of the belt helps in winter so long as it doesn't run anything else:nuts:

If you did remove all the the abovementioned stuff, how much weight would you lose? 50kg maybe? What does that gain? .3 of a second?

nah, it'd be much more than that. I don't know about the 2nd gens, but the 3rd gen door trims are about 5 kg each.

the AC would weigh about 10 kg on it's own. and if you included the electrics to run it, you'd probably save another 5 kg.

but going to the gym and losing 20 kg would be a good idea, in more ways than one.

cheers,
