Having just picked my Magna up and NOT HAPPY, had no petrol at all, had to drive at 100k for 10 mins to get back to town where the nearest petrol station was, as i turned the intersection it stalled lol

Lucky was only round the corner from petrol station and got it started again!! grrr

Anyway, what petrol is best for 3rd gens? Ended up filling it to just over half a tank of Shell premium unleaded which cost me 66 bucks for half a tank lol

Cheers

Regular unleaded 91, stick to well known brands like shell, bp etc. and you can't go wrong.
No point using high octane fuel in a 3rd gen without tuning it for it, unless you like burning money.

the 3rd gens are tuned for regular unleaded. you will see no improvement in power or economy by using anything else.

but that wasn't your question... and M 4 D DOG answered it.

click here (http://aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43627) for a thread with all the questions and answers you could dream of about which octane fuel to use.

Whoops, just reading the manual, in bold letters under driving: you must use unleaded petrol ILP,91 RON) lol guess half a tank of Premium unleaded wont hurt it!

dont use woolworths/safeway petrol as it will stuff ur injectors up after a while.

i work as auto elec and weve had several cars come in and the wont start. we worked out that the injectors were blocked but couldnt work out y. we asked the costomers wat petrol the were using and were they were getting it from. the all said from woolworths/safeway.

Just a note and this is something that has been covered many many times...

Wookie is correct that because the 3rd gens lack a knock sensor, we are unable to get any performance gains from using a premium fuel; HOWEVER I have found that Optimax\V-Power consistently gives roughly 50 - 70ks more per tank than when I have used regular unleaded.

Try it for yourself.

i got told to try a brew by a performance tuner half this and half that from 2 major outlets, said it gives best results possible from pump fuel

luck me no super charger anymore, so i just use the normal stuff, burns easier anyway than the 98ron stuff less black stuff in the pipe...

my 2nd gen loves the premium and hates e10 and doesnt seem to like some petrol from the more independant places

Where abouts was that mytsgt95?

I've had a bad tank of petrol from a Woolies once, and it turned out to be a clogged injector.

The annoying thing is there is about 5 Woolies nearby and only one Shell.

You can't hurt your car by running RON 98, only your wallet :P.
I use a combo of Shell/BP/Mobile/Safeway and Caltex (depending on where i am when i remember i need fuel) and haven't had a bad batch from any of the above. However i know people who have had bad batches of fuel from all of the above, i think it's just unlucky to cop a bad batch, unless the actual petrol station is dodge.

Yeah I reckon it's the luck of the draw.

And petrol is already expensive enough as it is, not need to add an extra 7-10c for premium for no reason!

For over three years about 90% of petrol I use is filled on Safeway petrol station. Never had problem with injectors and never had them cleaned. I use regular unleaded, city/hwy driving is roughly 50/50 , 210,000 km on the clock, average consumption just over 10 litres.

I know this is a 3rd gen forum but my KS v6 seems to get better economy when I fill up with the high octane premium?? is this right or only in my mind?

That's because 2nd gens have a knock sensor and can take advantage of premium fuel.

As has been said above you will always get a bit more economy (L/100km) out of 95 or 98 octane however a cost per km (ie $/100km) will be worse than 91 regular unleaded. I use E10 in my VR-X because I can't notice the difference between it and reguar unleaded and it's cheaper.

E10 is 95RON anyway - so you are getting a premium fuel for 4c cheaper than standard. Its bloody hilarious when you see a service station without premium advertising it as 95 RON (which it is) and one with premium keeps this fact quiet. I wonder why...

You'd be nuts to fill up on anything else :)

And comments on injectors + fuel systems - I just pulled mine out after running on E10 for the past 35,000Klms - compared them to brand new - they are identical. No deposits, nothing. They wern't this clean 20,000K ago.

Reading the Shell site it seems that their E10 is 94 RON. Caltex don't provide specific details.

FWIW Woolies/Safeway fuel is now locally refined by Caltex. Before they teamed up I think Woolworths imported from SE Asia. So the days of them having dodgy fuel should be well and truly over. We buy from Woolies and Shell, with no injector or other probs so far.

Errr I don't think so. As has been stated, Wollworths Petrol is now Supplied by Caltex, in NSW it comes directly from Kurnell where it is refined.

Whoever your 'source' is, they are telling you BS.

Is there any difference in LPG quality at Woolies, BP or Shell?:D

Can LPG be crap in Woolies like their petrol? Woolies normally sell LPG for cheap. BP the most expensive.

i highly doubt it, the gas comes from here and is worthless, dont we sell LPG to china for 2cpl?

just as a laugh run propane instead of the regular mix and see if you get a BOOOOST in performance, there are places that sell HI PO lpg lol

Reading the Shell site it seems that their E10 is 94 RON. Caltex don't provide specific details.

Interestingly, I was at a BP tonight and noticed they have a flyer about their new colour coding for pumps. This was interesting simply because it specified the RON of all fuels including the fact that their Ethanol added fuel is a RON91.

My friend and I (who had been discussing octane and relative power and relative energy density earlier in the evening) thought this was most unusual as ethanol naturally has significantly higher octane than standard fuel and adding ethanol to standard fuel should invariably boost the octane.

It would seem (perhaps) that BP may be using a lower-quality, less refined fuel with a lower than acceptable RON and then topping it up with ethanol to get it back up to the Australian standard again.

Well if you want to know somewhere to avoid I make a point of not stopping at United stations. Boss filled up his M-Class merc at the childs rd epping one here in vic and it blew the fuel pump...turns out from a full tank of PULP, it had about a half a litre of water in it. Might have just been a one off, but I'm not risking it after seeing his $2k repair bill!

i was thinking of this thread the other day before we took a drive up north and i thought "i dont need to put ultimate in, i will see how it goes on 95" and we filled up twice at BP (i prefer) and both places, hundreds of k's apart had no 95.

I have never had an LPG problem using any of the fuel suppliers. I don't even have a preference for a specific company. Whoever is cheapest and i am going past at the time gets my business.
My main companies though would be Woolies Petrol Plus tho as my mum does most of her shopping there and i use the Vouchers haha.. So we both win lol

To add to this - Caltex E10 is 94.5, Premium 95.5 As tested by an independent lab 1 week ago at my local one.

If the sales drone at the counter doesn't know what the octane is, ask to see their fuel test results (shows octane levels, particulate levels water levels blah blah).

They actually have to keep this on record for this reason.

Crude oil price has exceeded 95 USD/barrel. Still local fuel stations here are selling ULP for 120 cpl while they have increased the LPG from 45 to 54 cpl. This is simply not fair.  We demand an investigation from ACCC for price fixing!:bowrofl: :bowrofl:

No, we sell natural gas to china for 2c per litre, LPG is a bi-product from the production of petrol, (and diesel i think)

From my experience the car always responded best interms of refinement, and economy to BP fuel. I had mixed experience with Shell and Caltex was terrible with me. Anyone else had this? I used to drive and will soon be again driving a 3.5 litre.

there could be a number of reasons why there was water in that merc's fuel tank... fuel contamination could occur more likely in an older fuel station for a few reasons. eg:

1) the dip where the fuel measurement is taken had the cap left off...allowing water to contaminate the underground tank...but for that much water in his petrol tank... i HIGHLY doubt this is the reason....otherwise imagine how much water it would take to get into an in ground tank and contaminate under 80L of petrol (ULP can be around 45 000L tanks) i know sometimes where i work after its been raining alot... one particular tank as you take the lid off.. you can see the tanks cap (the measurement stick is under this screw cap) under a small pool of water.... in saying this... the water cant get into the actual tank and it wouldnt even be in excess of 1L compared to on average around 15 000L in the one tank.

2) some people believe old fuel stations have cracks in their underground tanks... allowing water to get in... but this is not true...otherwise there would be no fuel!

i think personal error was to blame for the problem.

to add to the thread.

my car LOVES vortex 95 and V power.... runs like **** on BP ultimate and regular ULP, dont ask me why!

i found that running my tj on 95 at the woolies and it is great i get extra kms out of a tank i put that e10 it chewed it like anything so all i can say is that woolies is cheaper and there fuel is good i love my car.
