View Full Version : Fill rear brake light hole

I've got a spoiler with brake light fitted to my car but I still have the brake light in the rear windscreen.

I can take it out but it leaves a huge hole, any ideas of what to plug the hole with?

Those of you with the rear brake light in the rear windscreen will know the size I'm talking about.

so you want to remove the light in the spoiler, or rear window? factory cars with a spoiler usually delete the rear window one, (which would just be removing the globe in your case)

but if you did really want to remove the one from the wing, a decent plastic welder would be able to fill the hole, but would require removing and respraying again

sounds like he wants to remove the high mount one behind the windscreen, and do something about the gap (since the roof liner is probably moulded around it)

question, is it really bugging you that much? you will either have 1 extra light (which you dont see), or an ugly hole/fillup job... how does a brake light annoy you so much? :P

Agreed, my mums magna has one of these lights all though its just glued in, and when it fell down i didnt really notice this "hole" you are talking about, but when i get a chance ill have a look!

PS: My mum has one inside the car as well as in the spoiler!

you could just unplug it so it doesn't work if you are only worried about how it looks when you have the brakes on. but personally i would just leave it. you never know when that extra light might be enough to get the attention of the driver behind you and prevent them slamming up your **** if you have to stop in a hurry.

From what I've read, it's actually illegal to have both; if you have a spoiler-mounted one, you have to disconnect the other one.

I'd be with the OP, remove it entirely, might give better rearview vision, assuming it's down the bottom of the window. Looks like there's a few different designs in 3rd-gen sedans, some less intrusive than others?

my third gen has it up the top

it is illegal to have both hence why the factory delete the one inside if a wing is fitted
and it's also an ADR that a high level brake light be fitted
came into effect in jul 89
i had to find out the cut off date because my VN has neither
and is jun 89 build :D

Whos gonna pick you up on it though? Someone gonna pull you over and go hey mate, you've got a brake light in your window and on your spoiler, you're getting a fine for that. I somehow doubt anyone would ever think anything of it. I've seen plenty of TJ's around with the spoiler and high mount brake light.

bear in mind OP is an international member, maybe NZ, so ADR doesnt matter ;)

I got one on my spoiler, and at the top of the windscreen.

Ah well, if anyone rear ends me they must be freakin blind. :D

Having said that, I've been rear ended at the lights before, chick drove off...

Mine is actually at the bottom of the rear windscreen, so the hole I want to fill is the one in the parcel tray.

I'm thinking you could simply replace your parcel tray with one from a TH/TJ/TL/TW (1999 onwards) Magna. These models have the high stop light mounted to the roof so the parcel tray from one of these would cover the hole.

Is it much drama to remove?

Not really just quite a few steps involved which I hope are all covered here:

- Remove rear seat base. Two clips at the front which you need to pull out and the base pops out.
- Undo the 3 bolts that hold the seat back secured. Two on each side are I think 12mm and the centre bolt is 13 or 14mm from memory.
- Go into the boot and remove the 4 or so black plugs from the ski port surround.
- While there, undo the 8 nuts that hold the speaker grills secured.
- Back in the cabin, lift the seat back up off its hooks and remove from car.
- Remove speaker grills.
- Remove gray plugs holding the parcel shelf in place.
- Undo centre seat belt bolt.
- Undo and remove baby capsule bolt/cover.
- Not sure how to remove the stop lamp from your car but will assume you do.
- Slide old parcel shelf out.
- Slide replacement parcel shelf in and reverse process.
