View Full Version : engine fault codes
hi everyone
word of warning , i am going to post a similar thread in members lounge too cos i want a quick answer
i read a year or two ago someone posted a thingo that had the translated flashing light = engine fault codes.
if that makes any sense.. im a bit drunk.
i did a quick search but i cant find it.
can someone point me in the right direction please?
sis's bf is a mech and will use the method as soon as we know what the codes are.
cheers evryone!
that wasnt the one that i was looking for man but cheers anyway
i am told to find the FAULT CODE TABLE apparently
all the flashing LED codes and what they mean

this gives you the flashes or pulses and what sensor is faulty
the short and long
short for the tens and longs for the digit
dont know where else to look

i was drunk that first night , but now that i look at that it makes a bit of sense and could prove useful , cheers man. i have a suspicion that there is something wrong with one of the sensors so we will give it a go.
pity i am back up at work now and it will have to wait for another 9 days.
can you clarify what short for the tens and long for the digits means or would my sis's bf (mechanic) know what they mean... assuming he is as competant as he is supposed to be that is :-)

the light stays on longer when it is doing the tens, and short for when it is doing the ones, so if it does 2 long flashes followed by 3 quick flashes that means the code is 23.

hey i think i found the one i was thinking of in that second link there.
it has a fairly long list of codes and what they mean..
my only questions now are ; that second thread is about a 2nd gen 4 cylinder.
would the codes still be the same for a 6 cyl?
and
the first thread is apparently for 1st gen diamentes...
is that like the same as 2nd gen magnas and anyway are the codes still valid for me?
cheers friends
just updating the thread,
we did the test and it came up with the continuous flashing light signifying that there is nothing wrong with any of the sensors.
dammit i was annoyed. i was really hoping to pinpoint the problem so i could take it to the mechs and get them to fix it without getting screwed around.
anyway , we changed the fuel filter (which was absolutely chockers with sludge) and cleaned the stepper motor. the car doesnt backfire and hesitate quite as often under acceleration , but it is still a far cry from being satisfactory.
after reading Lendas 'acceleration problem' thread i have a few more ideas.
will update again later....

some codes will differ for 4 cyl and 6 cyls
then ones for the auto matics will be also different
the TR/TS codes for V6 engines 3ltr and 3.5 seem to be the same codes
poor acceleration
if the filter was contaminated the injectors may have damaged
so dont squirt correctly
possibly plugs/leads then tune the car
yep cheers mate ,
now that i know its not anything sensor like (is it possible that the codes could still be clear if a sensor was faulty?) i can concentrate on the mechanical side , starting with the fuel system ie: pump and injectors or the plugs and dizzy.
i have changed the leads already but for some reason i havnt gotten around to looking at the diz or plugs yet.
also, it is blowing a bit of white smoke out of the exhaust.
this is burning oil isnt it? does that mean i have a busted piston ring? could that be causing all of this?

When does it blow smoke?
Mine only did this when I first started it after being left overnight.
I changed the valve stem seals and now it doesn't.
Rob
i have noticed a bit before while idling on startup.
i was told that it is blowing a bit as i am driving and on acceleration.
