Im looking at putting these into my TH - ive already lowered with King Springs (supposably 30mm lowered, seems more ).

What should i expect over my stock shocks that have done 100K kms them?

They drive OK for the first 10,000kms or so but then get quite soft.

What model numbers do they say they were? They have 3 different sets of springs for Magnas. 25mm, 40mm and 50mm.

KCFL42sL and KCRL43 are the model numbers

i just (like 500km ago) got some GT gas to go with my Whiteline 'lows' (about 30mm).... they seem to be fairly stiff at the moment and could do with a little more give!!! it hits harder than my old Hilux!! according to all the mech's and tyre places they all recommended them, or go to Koni's but they cost heaps more!!!

Oh, and my old shocks were rat shit!!! the car handles heaps better cornering and in accel and decel.... i'm finding myself unconciously heading into familiar corners about 10-15km/h faster cause it handles it so much better!!!

money well spent IMO!

Monroe GTs aren't too bad for the money. Used them in a Cortina 4.1. I changed fronts every 30 G or so (just to be safe) and rears every 50-60.
Note, Cortina is SO MUCH off balanced and nose heavier than Magna that u should easily do 50 G on them - well, depending how u trash your car of course.
Konis are excellent, but so is the price. Consider Pedders?

My brother works for Tenneco Walker as an engineer in the Walker section
and has a friend working in the Munroe section and he once told me that
they manufacture Pedders as well as Munroe shockers just to different
specifications and quality.

Cool - what do they say about the quality etc when compared to each other?

The pedders are manufactured to lower specs and quality compared to the
munroes.

Being brand new, compared to 4 year-old stockies they feel 100x better in all respects. im hoping the feeling will last :P Its not like before which was 'ahh crap, there is dip in the road ahead' and getting that sea-sick feeling of worn shocks.

I put kings in my wagon after putting in pedders springs. Pedders springs were as noisy as hell. Changed them to kings which are great. Cant complain. Lowered it 30mm.

I was also recomended to put in monroe gt gas which i did. They have killed the ride. Too firm. The old shocks couldnt handle the reduced travel quickly enough especially in the rear of the wagon. I have been told to go koni or bilstein if you can afford it. If not, maybe suss out monroe comfort gas. A step down from the gt being more comfortable but will be better than the stockers in there at the moment. All a big trade off. Soft and not the best handeling or good handeling but a hard ride.

That's the difference inbetween cheap and expensive shocks... All shocks will feel good when you are going from clapped out jallopies, but depending on how much $$$ the performance lasts.

Monroes are good shocks for everyday use, but if you push them hard with lowered uprated springs etc... they won't last long. I have hear of a lot of people who found that the GT gas lose their charge after about 20-30KKms.

how much did you guys pay for the monroe's and the springs?

trancer
04-03-2004, 08:31 PM
I paid roughly $600 for the shocks, about $400 for the springs fitted. mind you each visit was done in about 25 minutes. i probably paid too much but work pays for it :)

$600 for all four? is that a good price or just an average street price?

do shocks have such a low life span????

r u meant to change shocks that frequently??????? or is it just for monroes?

$600 is a bit above average for GT gas.... i got quoted from $450 up to $700 from 5-6 various places with the dearer people wondering how the hell the others could do them for that cheap!!!

I put monroe sensatrac GTs on my old TR wagon and was very impressed, that was with stock springs and it handled great and ride wit comfort still excellent, they are meant to be progressive. I didn t have the car that long after that so I dont know how long that would last.

Koni's are meant to outlast the car they say, so if you were keeping the car 20 yrs would be worth it!

i got monroe gt gas at the back and sensatrac on the front!
the gts are way better than sensatrac, i think the Sensatrac are overratted and are not meant to be used with lowered springs!, in other words shit!!!

the gts are hard as, but im not complaining! i never complaing about quality and handling! when i turn 60 or so then i'll give 21 shits about comfort!

yes, sensatrac definietely not shit with standard springs- its a progressive shock and would be forced to hard setting in a lowered spring.

mercury

oh well that is something new then!
anyway, progressive or not, they are not good in cornering, either normal springs or lowred springs!!!

the only difference i noticed with the sensatrac, is that i get less diving!!! that's alll!
