Would this work on a stock single disc headunit?
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=521811
It plug into a stacker DIN plug - there's one on the stock unit isnt there?
Might be worth a try :-)

you could try, not sure which models have the CD changer plug (not sure if they all got it, as it wasnt an option on all models), but why not just grab an itrip off ebay, or better yet, get rid of the stock HU (as this is a mjor bottleneck in the stereo, and any music will sound crud through it anyway)

have i mentioned anything from apple is rotten!! yuk!
wow good on him!
but useless
lucky for us magna owners we a blessed with one of the most versatile cars in terms or headunit fittment there is
so for $20 you can get a radio with an aux in (i did brandnew local autobarn! yes its crap but it works)
or spend a few $$ and have better sound more power better options etc...
not sure if it's that easy in the other cars though

So anything from Apple is crap??? but your happy to use a $20 unit for tha AUX. I guess thats why Apple have an 87% marketshare on all portable music devices....must be crap then!!!!

did i say i've used it?
its a hole filler, easier to sell a car with a radio than a car with a hold and wires hanging out.... works though
lets not argue about apple here, i have a few ipods nano shuffle and real one that i havent seen in ages...
they suck!!
i much prefer any other brand that i can drag and drop music as i please, in WMA AAC MP3 etc... not using useless Itunes and its Nazi software
clever marketing they call it, there are far better products out there.... but the ipod is like panadol!
if apple are so smart lets see them out sell PC's then :P

yes and i hate Microsoft with a passion, and i can tell you where they can put their vista and other associated programs!!!
but back on topic, the Factory Clarion TJII deck here has the stacker controll, but this mod is best left to the HeathYoungs of the forum, and even then im sure he'd figure out something even more technical and better that half of us wouldnt be able to understand :P
so just get a aftermarket h/u and be done.... it's easier

Well I've found the 13 pin DIN plug here in Oz. It's available from Mini Kits in Adelaide (http://www.minikits.com.au/) for about $4, with $7 postage. Dick Smith and Jaycar don't stock them.
And I'll use a flush mount 3.5 mm socket (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS0133&CATID=35&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=373) from Jaycar on the dash to plug the iPod into.
A tech at Clarion is looking into the wiring possibilities for me. I found him on a WRX forum (http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/index.php?showtopic=59385).
When / if I get a wiring solution I'll let you know.

3.5mm out of an ipod wont be that much better than a FM transmitter.
that said, i have a 3.5mm -> 2xrca, and run it to the pocket infront of the middle console (should be able to run it up the side). much easier than drilling a hole and making the connection, considering u'll still have a cable infront of everything
and the quality of the connection still aint good (this on an eclipse CD8445), prefer mp3cd or normal cds.
good luck, but why not just replace the HU??

Why? Because it's a bit a of a challenge, because it will only cost me about $10 and because I like the look and functionality of the stock HU.
I know it will sound alot better than the FM transmitter I have, because I've compared my transmitter to the 3.5 mm aux in on my other car's HU.
And if it doesn't work, we'll just continue to use the transmitter...

You can already run Windows on them, if that's what you mean. Why would you want to though? It would be like taking the V6 out of your Magna and putting in a 3-cyl Daihatsu Charade engine. :P
I'm not sure how the iTrip goes in terms of quality, but from what i've heard it isn't bad and seems to do it's job well. The Aux In will sound better due to less interference from surrounding devices; the audio follows the cable and not the air. The iPod's best quality is out of the dock connector though, so if you're really into sound to the finest detail, then you'll need a CD In port on the back of the HU.

if you like the look/functionality of the stock HU then you really havent used a decent aftermarket brand, with good EQ settings.
meh go ahead, but personally i dont think 99% of people would do anything drastic to use an ipod through an older stereo, be fighting too much to get decent sound out of the thing.
and for the record, i'm still running stock speakers on mine, so i'm not talking from a full audiophile point.

I have done the whole aftermarket thing in the past, but the stock Magna setup suits me fine.
To be honest, its about appearance as well as sound... I like not having a bunch of flashing lights on a car stereo, and I like having a volume knob rather than the buttons I seem to see on lots of aftermarket head units.
Anyway, I'm not after perfection, just trying to avoid having to change FM stations when we go on long trips and get a bit better sound :)

I would have said it was like putting in a Victa two stoke, but I think we're in furious agreement! (post written on an iBook...)
And yeah, I know the dock is a better output, but I'm not clever enough to rig that up!
My transmitter isn't an iTrip - it's an AirPlay (http://playlistmag.com/reviews/2005/01/airplay/index.php). But the same problem would affect an iTrip as well... the Magna wagon's antenna is a l-o-n-g way from the front seat, so there's not much signal for the antenna to pick up :(

Ah well I suppose you can still turbocharge the Charade engine, so the two stroke it is! :P (post written on a Power Mac G4)
Anyway, I never thought the distance between the Magna antenna and the transmitter would make a huge difference, what are the broadcast ranges on these? The distance between the two should be no more than 2 metres, tops, so if it isn't even working well with those...
I looked into adding a stereo auxilary in, should be possible with just about every stereo out there. The layout of parts on the PCB makes it difficult to tell which wire goes where though.
Finally, I can see the advantages in the stock HU. It's cheap, it can be modified easily, it isn't distracting and to potential theives looking to break in, it's a real sleeper.

Here's the pin wiring, confirmed yesterday by a Clarion Melbourne tech. So with a stacker attached via C-BUS (this 13 pin plug on back of HU) you could tap into the cable, with a double pole double throw switch to connect an iPod. The stacker would need to be playing a CD to make the HU accept an external signal, but the audio on pins 6, 7 & 8 could come in from the mp3 (or the stacker if you switched the DPDT switch).
This guy did the same thing with the same Clarion cable in a SAAB (http://users.adelphia.net/~jlehome/aux_input.htm).
