I've got yet another first gen. And this time, it is an Elite! The one that was on eBay earlier this week. Went to have a look last Thursday, it's fit for my purposes and sound. PT to Maldon sucks

Grey over silver sedan, 267k, new water pump, everything electrical was working, it's had maintainance done, but will be given the standard service, as should be done to all used cars. It's out of rego, though, and there's rust in the driver's door, where the "drain plug" does it's excellent job of not draining.

Pics from the sale, more'll come when I take delivery late this week or next.

I don't plan on killing it, and if the auto dies, it's a 5-speed manual. I still have another motor in my folks garage, but this motor's still good, oil pressure's excellent.

Yeah, I'll be patching the rust to pass a roadworthy. Though, to get it registered's going to cost more than the price of the car alone!

Looks good Gav, good to see you've stuck with the more agile 1st gens and havent gone for the "2.6 2nd gen body upgrade". etc etc.

Pretty good condition aswell, whats the condition of the trans, engine mounts, lifters, timing/balance chains, CVs, and compression like?

:D

I wasn't able to do a compression check, but the motor sounds OK, there be a bit of a leak, but the oil pressure's good, no smoke when I had a look at it, unfortunately, not from cold, chain noise is pretty good, trans worked fine, (best one I've had in a while!) be performing a second gen upgrade to some components.

Must say, the grey on silver looks bloody sweet. Little body filler and some other easy fixes and it should be a fairly nice car. :)

I gots it! Too dark for photos, though. Wait until morning.

Things to do:
Service, including possible thermostat. The thing was too cold on the freeway back.
Sort out the :rant:ing fuel guage! I ran dry when it said I should still have two bars. Took two fuel cans to ensure there was sufficient in the tank to get to the servo.
Clean

Today's fixups. New sparkplug leads (fixed up the idling very well), replaced the blown globes in the dash, second can of degreaser, to clean up the motor

Tomorrow's fixups.
Both front seatbelts
The rear muffler
Oil and fuel filters, thermostat and coolant
Blown parker lamp
After that, and resealing the rocker cover, she'll be ready for presentation.

The CVs look beautiful, she's doing much better after the oil change, too.

Just gotta get the muffler, and fix the tranny leak, and clean the accrued crap from the tranny leak. Engine doesn't leak oil anymore! :D

Hehe. Should've just bought one without any of that stuff wrong. Although like I can talk. Have to replace the tyres and fix a couple of the windows. Besides that, nothing that I can see. I guess if you've got a parts car it's all good then :)

How hard is it to pull out the instrument cluster? Got a loose bulb. It starts working when I give the dash a light tap with my finger.

Premium money then. We picked this one up for $600. Yeah, I know we have to expect problems, even with Super expensive luxury cars like the Elite.

That means it's... Wow, time flies. That old? I think my internal clock stopped years ago.

What amazes me about Gavs Elite is the paintwork. It's metallic and doesn't look like its roof isn't... well stuffed.

Gav
10-11-2007, 06:25 PM
Yeah, the paintwork, especially on the clearcoat of first gens rivals that as found on cave walls. My bonnet and boot are great, but my roof is buggered. Respray's on the eventual cards, along with new suspension. The car's basically sound, and apart from the trans leak, it's doing very well. As soon as get it clean enough to whack some sealant on where it leaks, it's going in for the roadworthy.

To get the cluster out, gently lever the two "vents" off the cluster, that'll expose two screws. Undo them, and the front of the bezel lifts off, exposing four more screws. Undo them, and the cluster lifts right out.

Current update.

Steam cleaned the engine and underbody yesterday, it's come up a beauty. Got two new tyres fitted (the spare, and one of the others was looking a little sorry), the new muffler whacked on. You can't hear me coming from a block away anymore.

Also, flushed the cooling system out, taken out the remains of the thermostat, and will be fitting a new radiator. Will put a new therm in next week, after another block flush.

Another update. She's got a name. Melanie, meaning dark skinned. After all, she is a nice dark colour.

New radiator fitted, and the entire cooling system overhauled. She ran beautifully across the hot day today.

Next two things on the list. Auto trans service, and fix the rear power windows. They still work, but they're very, very slow.

Further along, will be regas the aircon, new suspension, and respray the roof, but they're not urgent, and that'll be all she wrote.

Sourced the leak underneath, the inner boot of the driver's side driveshaft, it looks great, but there's gotta be a split or something, as it's covered in grease. I had wait for it to come again after we steam cleaned the underbody, and I'll reseal this boot on it, be replacing the driveshafts eventually as part of a modification.

Driving in the rain was fun, due to the worn shocks, it torque steers like all buggery, especially turning. But, it's slowly coming together, as a great example of a first gen.

The wrecker complemented it, too, when I returned the old radiator.

I have a radiator here for a wagon if you want it.

Also I have an automatic gear box thats in good nick (fluid is red, looks like it's strait out of the bottle) however I have never driven it.

Nah, the second replacement's perfect, and the auto's still great. If it plays up, I'm going to manual convert.
