View Full Version : Magna on premium?

Hey all, My girlfriend just bought a TR Magna for her first car, anyway it's been well looked after one lady owner, her grandmother actually, it hasn't been driven much, only done about 110 on the clock so it's basically still a baby anyway more the the point, her grandmother says it runs on premium, which i don't think is right because from what i can gather no 2nd gen's came out running on premium, i may have got the model number wrong,
Also another question is there a chance it could be converted to a dual fuel? Or is it different with premium?
Apollo441,
Premium just means she has run it on 98 octane petrol from the servo. Most cars will run premium just fine, it's simply a cleaner form of petrol. Some use it because it claims to clean your engine out and make the car run smoother (myself included). My advice? Tell her to spend the extra $5 each time she fills up, its worth it.
Yes, you can convert it to Dual Fuel, that simply means you get a conversion done to run it on LPG and cost yourself less money - the installation costs arond $2000, but a government rebate of the same amount is available. Gas costs between 40-60 cents a litre, as opposed to $1.20-1.40 on standard unleaded petrol. If its a V6, dual fuel should be ok but on a 4 banger i wouldn't recommend it - loss of power coupled with a 13 year old car might end in tears!
Hope this helped.

I didn't realise that they had 2nd gens on premium, it's a V6 as well, i was just curious about it running on premium, thanks to letting me know about the dual fuel, that helped.
I know about converting i've had it done myself, i just didn't know if it was effected by premium.

Also, 2nd Gens came with a knock sensor that will adjust ignition timing to benefit from the 98ron fuel.
You will notice a performance increase/better feel from using the Premium fuel. In a 2nd Gen that is.
3rd Gens have no knock sensor so will not adjust ignition timing accordingly, but some still feel the car runs better on better fuel.

used premium in my car for the last 4 months. could not tell a difference over standard.
Best fuel i used was Optimax Racing. Alot more power and way more k's from a tank.
Thats $1.54 though...
Id run premium in it once every 2 weeks.
I spent the extra $5 per week in it for nothing really, got the same amount of kays from ULP...

Ahh ok, well thanks for the help. I'll just tell her she can't put it on gas so she can suffer :bowrofl:
Premium should according to the manual improve power, and fuel economy. Never tried it so can't tell you for sure. Some premiums are better than others though.
Paul, you ran premium from united or something didn't you which made the car run worse?
I'd just run regular ULP, seems fine to me.
Did you use the Ethanol-enhanced premium? That will slightly worsen fuel economy.

The E10 was horrible stuff
the optimax racing with 5% was the best petrol ive used, highly recommend it if you can be bothered wasting $10 more then usuall

I found this with any fuel containing ethonal, Ive been sticking to BP premium, mobil and shell arnt bad either. No ethonal, ran worse.
But I believe premium, car responds better

I find my car runs heaps smoother with premium.... Dont get any extra k's but the throttle respose and general driving feels better.... Placebo? maybe....
And i too have read the owners manual and it states a 5KW gain using premium. I believe it.
From 120KW to 125KW for the V6 TR/TS

Personally my car seems to run just as good, if not better, on United's E10. Been running it the majority of the time for the past 2yrs or so.

I used it twice and got a better result than the regular fuel, just used more. same crisp response as the premo? weird?

Ethanol blended fuel has a higher RON than ULP. It should also give you more KM's per tank and better performance.
The only reason your car would run crap on E10 is because there is a problem with your fuel system as it will pick up all the dirt, grime and water that petrol wont.

There is nothing wrong with E10, if you could buy it around here I would use it.

Never put ethanol/E10 in either of the Magna's but did put it in the Tarago ONCE and to be honset, never again! Even on the underpowered Tarago 4cyl engine, it ran crap for that and the next tank of normal fuel.

That's because you only ran one tank through it, give it at least 4 tanks to work all the **** through your fuel system.

I use Premium on mine too, and yeah..i think there is a bit of increased power from it and the she runs smoother too. Shell's got 96ron premium, bp and caltex have the 98ron (but they charge a fair bit more than Shell).
Id be willing to give that optimax racing a shot tho!
Ethanol has less energy density than petrol, E10 will use about 3% worse fuel economy than straight petrol. However, E10 has 94 RON, compared to 91 RON (theoretically...:bowrofl: ) so the knock sensor on the TR/S will adjust to suit the higher octane, POSSIBLY improving fuel economy slightly compared to regular unleaded
