View Full Version : 3.5L sounding ricey with wildcat extractors and supercat muffler. Normal?

Hey everyone, I've got a KF verada which I only recently bought, it's got wildcat extractors, a 2.5" system and a supercat muffler on it.
It's got a great idle note and nice deep (but not too loud) cruising note, but under load it starts to sound really really ricey.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or is there something a bit wrong with mine?
If others have had a similar experience, is there anything that can be done to get rid of the ricey over-tones that turn up under load?

I'll try to see how good the mic on my digital camera is and do a recording.
Hopefully be back with an flv in a short while. :)
(I'm terrible at describing sounds)

FLV is a flash video. Like google video and youtube and stuff. :)
Unfortunately, the mic on my camera is really really bad and it's very difficult to hear what I mean.
However, listening to it keeping in mind M4DDOG's reply, I'd lean towards sounding like beater. It's got the deep bassy sound under it but there's an over-tone which sounds like a beater.
Really quite similar to this civic:

i have wildcats on my 3L and they sound nothing like that.. although i have mine running into dual lukey mufflers so it really is the mufflers.
i honestly thought that the wildcats woudnt connect up to the 3.5L engines? i must be wrong..

wtf how can it sound like the civic ? The rb20det in the vl has a 2.5" with a lukey and sounds awesome.
Even when we had a 3" straight through on the rb30 it sounded grunty as hell.

Lose the cannon. I have an almost identical system, but with a Manta 2.5" muffler, and mine sounds nothing like that.

Cool, thanks.
I should probably at this point clarify what part is reffered to as the "cannon" in my exhaust system. I had previously always understood it to mean a big "cannon tip". It would seem perhaps I am wrong and it actually reffers to the muffler?
Any clarification would be great. Thanks.

Yeah 'cannon' generally refers to the muffler bud.
:D
Just noticed though... your starter motor sounds NOTHING like any 3.5L I've ever heard... weird! I've pretty much only heard TJ's though.

Cool, cheers.
Important to note however is that the audio in this thread so far is a Civic, not my car. It just happens to be the closest sounding thing to my 'rada.
I'll try to have the supercat pulled off and replaced with something.
Anyone got any ideas what I'd expect to pay to rip the supercat off and replace it with something which is recommended? (like the Lukey)
... anyone wanna buy the supercat? lol.

I finally figured out a less lazy way to do this.
Stuck my laptop on the backseat and a telephone headset on the ground near the back end of the car.
This is what my car sounds like:

It sounds actually really awesome though my speakers on my computer with a particularly large sub. Doesn't sound quite so bassy in person.
Thanks for all advise so far. :)

I had a supercat on my TF V6... just the muffler, left all the rest of the exhaust original and left the resinator in as well and it sounded sweet as.. i'll be buying another one of those mufflers with my next 3rd gen.
My advice maybe add a resinator in the pipe somewhere it could reduce that ricey noise and keep it a deeper tone.

It will possibly be, if it indeed has a full exhaust system, the gases bouncing around inside the exhaust piping on their way to the muffler making that "ricey" sound. Best cure is a resonator or two, and a better muffler.

it could be that the muffler is stuffed. if all the packing in it is gone it won't do much in the wa of reducing sound.
i have a cannon on the back of my magna (put there by previous owner) and it sounds ok, but it still has both the middle muffler and resonator that come on the redback systems. on my last magna i had a lukey rear muffler and we cut the centre muffler out and it sounded similar.
lukey muffler fitted, with pipe facing downward to avoid rear bar, your looking at about $150

Yup after hearing the sound file it sounds like you need a resonator mate. Hot dog should do the trick and still keep it high flowing.

Other factors could be; a 3" or bigger cat, not enough resonators. Sometimes one isn't enough.

muffler an the engine are the 2 things that determine sound... everything else just changes it a bit ie bit bassier or whatever. Change the muffler.

You think your muffler sounds ricey? Mine sounds like a drunk bee farting in a tube.

Cheers for all the input there, it is all greatly appreciated. :)
Sadly the current sound is what it sounds like *after* I had a resonator added to the system. Before I added the resie it was even worse. Looking at the underside it almost looks like they put in two of them, unless one is the cat... it could be.
I shall get some local quotes on replacing the back muffler with a lukey (or similar) and see where I go from there.
At the moment its bearable, just a bit of an annoyance.
