My TJ seems all of a sudden this morning won't change out of second gear and when I put the foot down it would just rev high without increasing speed. Then just now it has decided to just flash on the N on the dash and will only drive very slowly and not increase speed.

If anyone has any ideas on what this would be, I'd be greatful to hear any suggestions as well as how much i would be looking at to get it fixed if it's more complex than something that could be done by a novice.

Put simply your car is in limp home mode. It is stuck in 3rd gear to allow you to drive home safely without further damage. You need to take your car to an auto transmission place or Mitsubishi, and they will find out whats wrong.

Could be as simple as a blown capacitor in the TCU, or could be much worse like a gearbox failure.

My car had the exact same problem. It would randomly throw itself or start up in 3rd. 6 trips to the dealer over 4 months and in the end they replaced the ECU. now its fine.

You could also check the fluid level first. Its the dipstick right below your air intake snorkle.

How much did the new ecu cost?

could be as simple as a loose earth connection in and around or on the gearbox.....i had that on a previous car which was an auto.

I had a though about the transmission. I have a 95 TS which I am trying to get rid of, but is the transmission from the TS able to be pulled out and put into the TJ with no problems? If not what sort of price would I be looking at for a reconditioned one for the TJ or would it be better to just get a new one?

Hey man

Call Mitspares they have good condition trannies going for around $700 with $240 for fitting, highly recommended as new units are thousands and thousands (Like $3k or something).

And no TS is incompatible.

Sounds very cheap, make sures their is some sort of warranty with it, to recondition will cost anywhere between $1000 - $2500 depending on the place. Dont get it done at mitsubishi find a Automatic place. Alot would suggest for that price to convert to manual and save the trouble. TS into a TJ not even worth considering, you can find swap-overs for fairly cheap for the TJ, but if they are quality is another question, they could last 1 month or they could last years.

Can anyone recommend any decent places in Brisbane to get a reconditioned tranny put in?
