Hey ppl. Ive read up on a few previous topics on neon lights and i was wondering if it is possible to install them into the interior of a TF magna? I have seen WTCHME's car and that has neons so im guessing that it is possible. If it is possible, im looking to put some under the passenger seats footwell, the boot and possible the drivers footwell. Now for some questions on these positions

1. Where do they 'plug' into (power source)?
2. How do you mount them?
3. Is it possible to have a switch so they are not on every time the car is running?
4. Is this a DIY job?

Any other information would be MUCH appreciated.

1. Where do they 'plug' into (power source)?
you can either plug it straight into the cigeret lighter or wire it into your power cables, the cigeret lighter wire is the easiest i think if you want to hardwire it in.

2. How do you mount them?
you can either drill and screw them on or glue them in or 3M them. but 3M tends to fall off over time with heat.

3. Is it possible to have a switch so they are not on every time the car is running?
Yes, Switch is easy, just connect a switch in series with the positive wire and wa laa, done.

4. Is this a DIY job?
Yep.. pretty simple, helps if you have a voltmeter to find the positive wire, a simple drill bit or some glue and some screws if you want to screw them in place.

There is a fine art of making your car pretty and street legal, make sure you can't see the neons directly, as it is defectable, it is legal to have neons as long as no one (including yourself) are in direct vision to the tube, but it is legal to see the glow from em' (eg the glow off the street)

theres many ways you could do it
and DO NOT BYE NIONS!!! bye cold cathodes... they are shit loads brighter....
bye them off tebutcher.... if hes still around... where did hayden go???

Thanks for the replies guys, im pretty sure i want to do this now, but if anyone has pictures or a website with some pictures to help me out then that would b great.

SPAZ: so does that mean blue inside the car is illegal? im not sure it would matter considering u hav a switch to turn them on and off.

cold cathodes can be found in most computer shops. fairly cheaply and also come with an inverter.

Pardon me for asking but what exactly does the inverter do?

as i said

http://www.pccasegear.com.au/category5_1.htm

they are on sale for $22 each very nice :) u can get sound sensitive ones tho, now i know those are illegal but would be cool to go along with ur music :)

Pardon me for asking but what exactly does the inverter do?

computers run on ac (cos the power comes from the wall) and the power for the ciggy lighter comes from a battery which is dc, and vice verse, or this is how i understand it.

i can get some neons for computers at $16 a piece that are sound reactive, or good cold cathodes for $25 or cheaps ones for $20. and thats about the average prices ive seen.

actually computers run on 240 av but goes to ur power supply and mostly ur computer will run on 12v DC (and 5v DC) but an inverter changes it back to AC and a higher voltage (around 1200v i think i readup on it ages ago) otherwise the gas inside the lights will not light up

as ur cig lighter runs on 12v DC (i think?) the inverter will invert the power to AC and highervoltage so the light will com on

(a bit confused) so bassically it is like a transformer on a mobile phone charger only instead of changing voltage (which it prob does) it changes ac to dc and vice versa?

[THUGDOUT]
19-02-2004, 06:44 PM
changes voltage and dc-ac, but dun worry bout that all u gotta do is solder the red wire to ur 12v in ur car and the black wire to your negative and u have light :)

i have 4 blue neons IN my car and 1 in the boot. i got some bad and low quality pics if u want to see
n e way when i was round the beach at abou 3am, i got pulled over for a licence check with all the blue happening in my car. the coppa didn't say n e thing baout them. just took my licence and came back with it

i think the rule is that u can have n e lights in the car as long as u cant see the light sorce

thats my guess.... maybe the copper the checked me had no cluse about it

bout the inverter, i dunno if u need it cause i took my friends neons from his PC and just hardwired it to the back of my lighter and swtich and it works fine

i stole this thing off my friend, its a sound sencitive box (small as match box) and u plug all ur neons thru it.. and wot it does is that it changes the voltage pwoer to ur neons according to the sound...
so yeh.. all the neons in the car was plusing and it was pretty trippy

Im very tempted ot order them off this site : http://www.pccasegear.com.au/category5_1.htm

Before i do, would anyone know if these particular cold cathode lights are suitable for a car. i.e can u wire them up or are they strictly meant for a computer.

both computers and cars run of a 12volt DC so it doesnt really matter what you run them on, either will work

[THUGDOUT]
22-02-2004, 12:30 PM
yes they are suitable now get them before they go off sale price back when i got my irst one i paid $50 for one :( but that was 4 years ago

i got a TR
i just took out my centre concole thing.... and the thing where the head unit goes
run the wires from behind the pedalz, thru the side wall(should come off or u can slip it thru the gap)
stick ur hand in the whole and find ur wire,
hook it to a switch and to the back of ur the c/lighter
put back ur concole and ur off

i used zip ties to starp them onto this a/c tube that runs across above the pedals

NOTE: try not to aim ur air conditioning air flow going downwards. might over heat the neons

yeh... didn't use the best wording but i hope u get the flow..
