KL Gtvi. On long trips exhaust drone between 2000 and 3000Rpm was driving me crazy.
After a lot of reading and and sitting in the rear seat on a recent 2 hour drive this is what I worked out.
Exhaust noise enters car through right hand air outlet behind (side of)rear bumper. It then travels up through hollow between boot floor and guard, behind the boot trim (which has a large air gap behind it) and up through the C pillar which is like a large echo chamber. Result "drone"
Purchased a 3mm sheet of mdf from bunnings. Cost $3.00
Pulled back right hand side trim in boot. (Drivers side) using a piece of cardboard made a template to fit gap in floor of boot making sure it extended as far forward as the wheel arch.
Used template to cut out pice of Mdf to fit.
Used existing single screw used to hold bottom of side trim to the floor to screw it into place.
Replaced trim and went for a drive out on the highway.
Drone has disapeared. Still hear exhaust growl when you put your foot on it but loudest noise in the car now is low profile tyres on course bitumen.
To prove to myself it wasn't the "placebo" effect took a mate who has been critical of the exhaust drone in the past for a drive. He couldn't believe something so small could make such a big differerence.
For those of you with the factory sports mufflers who want the car sounding more refined inside this is defininately worth $3.00 and half an hour of your time.
Cheers
