gday all,

My mate has a first generation Magna with an auto in it and yesterday morning the auto blew up.

My questions are

1. How easy is it to remove the gearbox and do we have to remove the engine as well.

2. How much are parts for the autos?

I have a mate who has built autos for a living for the last 20 years so i think he will be able to rebuild it for my mate but i was just wondering if my mate is better off just replacing the whole car or getting it fixed. Money is very tight.

thanks heaps guys

Basically it made a loud bang noise and the car no longer drove. (I wasn't there I am afraid so i can only tell you what my mate told me)

Depending on which state you are in there are self service wreckers who for a coule bucks also offer a limited warranty. May be a good way to go

read my site and how i changed engines, its pretty much the same except urs is alot heavyer and u dont have to play around with fuel pumps, if you end up doing it yourself just make sure you have a digital camera and i will be able to help you thru it over a week or two

OK lets use the example of my sister's tarago whos gearbox I had replace at the start of jan... (I know it's not a magna but it will give you something to start on)

Ok one thing you have to relise that Auto gearboxes are very heavy so if you don't have the means to remove the old one and replace it with a new one then forget it

Ok back to my story, 2 days before I needed to go away for a major work gig and the gearbox just died...

Ok long story short I did not have the time or tools to DIY it so I mannage to get a second hand gearbox (with torque convertor) and 3 month wantarry for $375 and I got a mechanic to fit it for about $200 (the next day) it's better then taking it to a gearbox place to get your auto rebuilted (that costs min $2k and a copple of weeks)

chew on that for a little while :)

cheers

Thanks for the replys people. I am not very good mechanical and after talking to a mate who specialises in autos (has worked with them for the last 20 or so years) he told me the Magna ones are a huge job and not very easy to do.

I Know autos are heavey cause my Torana used to have a 3 speed auto in it but i swaped it for a four speed manual... When we pulled it out we used the jack to take its weight.

At this stage he will just save up and get it fixed, cause my mate thinks it is the torque converter spline that has died.

Thanks again people. :)

Mate, if it is a first gen, go to pick a part, get one for about 150 inc warranty, lift out the engine and box, swap the box over then refit, can be done in about a day.
