View Full Version : getting wrecked 98 KF

there is a very good chance i may be getting a free wrecked 98 rada, with a smashed rear end. (no leather)
i currentley have a 98 TF Advance, so i want the parts of the rada onto mine.
im thinking power windows/door trim,
3.5L engine swap
parabolics
fog lights
climate control
various interior pieces such as chrome door handles, curticy lights,
does anyone know of any difficulty in swapping over the electric windows, climate control and 3.5L engine? might use the box too as it has done less kms than mine.
ive done a search, but a lot of them change topic or dont answer the question,
since i will have the whole car i can take off any part i need. and copy the setup of wiring ect ect. just need a little insight.
i might drop in some ralli art cams, and remapped ECU and various other parts like Ported throttle body while the engine is out. since im getting the car for free, i dont see why not. but i dont want to spend a heap either.
any help greatly appreciated

Dont bother with the climate mate. A few have looked into it and there is a heck of a lot of work in it. Probly yo the point that it would be easier to fix the rear of the rada and go from there. Everything else is a goer tho, while your at it, get yourself a manual gearbox and convert too.

the rear of the rada is too banged up, its a write off, and its a crappy colour any way, and its missing some pannels off the front end, so i can have the rest. whole interiour and engine bay. besides veradas are too heavy for my liking anyway lol (no offence to verada owners out there)

KF Verada (http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/specs.php?id=89716)
TF Advance (http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/specs.php?id=89788)
Weight difference: Verada 1494kg vs Magna 1466kg = 28kg. (Id say 20kg of this is in the engine which you are hoping to swap anyway, and maybe 8kg for bumpers/climate control)
Not to mention 300nm shifting ~1500kg vs 255nm shifting ~1450kg.
I hate people who make comments before they actually do some research. How Many Veradas have you driven to "not like" cos I guarantee the KF will smash your TF Advance from go to whoa anyday.

if you actually read my thread, i never even speculated that my car would beat a 3.5L verada, but i have heard from many ppl that actaully own veradas saying that they are a fair bit heavier, but being an older KF mabey the weight difference isnt as large as the newer veradas. and im looking at putting in the 3.5 in my car, so lighter car, bigger engine. i dont want heavier car and bigger engine.
i hate it when ppl just blurt out, with out looking into what the question is actually saying, i was looking for some advice, not critism, on somthing i am technically correct on anyway. isnt that the whole point of this club??? so relax, oh and the verada is actually 1549KG so that allmost 80KG more. i did my research mate (from genuine Mitsubishi 1998 operators Manual, not from some random website)

Manual 3.0 yes no dramas.
But Auto 3.0 vs Auto 3.5, even with 80kg difference, the Verada would eat it up.
To the OP, I wasnt directing it straight at you, I was just stating that the differnce in weight between the early Veradas (KE/KF) and the 3.5L as opposed to the 3.0L easily makes up for a few extra kilos.
Ill admit my KJ is a heavy troll and sometimes it can be annoyingly heavy, but the KE/KF the difference is minimal and the 3.5 easily makes up for it over the 3.0L, and then some.
If your 3.0 was a manual then different story.

Buddy if you have the time it is an intensive swap, Just strip the Magna of its gear and then install the verada gear and climate control wont be a problem as long as you use the veradas climate control wiring loom and of course the varada's aircon box....
As for the engine and gearbox as long as you change the BEM and ECU/TCU everything else will go into place
Electric windows can be a nightmare to fit i have heard but if you are keen go for it
And seeing as it is a TF/KF swap it sould be a lot easier than say a TE/KJ at least its the same model...
Best of luck......
Craig
Haven't really got much to contribute, except to say I reckon you have a brilliant idea. Even if you pay someone to install the 3.5L and gearbox you far in front of most people who get that done, because you didn't actually pay for the engine. Does it have the front bar? That'd be a nice addition to the outside too :)

Oh and with this, your both wrong, KF Ei is 1525kg and the KF Xi is 1549kg :P

I'm pretty sure the KE and KF Ei's and Xi's had the chrome grille. I'm yet to see an Ei older than a KH without the chrome anyway. So he probably does have one.

My KH Ei doesn't, it has a body-coloured frame and silver dashes

Edit: Sorry, I just realised what you meant, the two models prior to the KH had chrome grills on both trims, but the KH Ei scored the above grill instead.
I mean pre-KH.....Pretty sure KH was the first one to not have the chrome grille on the Ei in the 3rd gens. Sometimes it just sucks to have the newer car bahahahaa...
Damn I love the KE/KF/KH fronts....

KE/KF have chrome grille surround, but the inners are black horizontal strips.
Same grille is used on Ei/Xi models.

Very much agreed. I used to prefer the TJ front, but now I'm actually liking the early 3rd gen front more.
Lowrider, what grille is currently on the front of yours? Is it the mesh one you've got in your profile pic? I personally think that suits your car better, although if you put the KF front bar on I'm not so sure. Any chance of some higher res pics of your car as is atm? I'm yet to see it properly and she looks bloody good from what I've seen.

im actually on the look out for a TH grill to do the letterbox mod too, and i allready have a TJ bar and VRX piece being painted. so when im done, it will have letterbox grill from a TH,(colour coded of cource), TJ bar with VRX addon, fog lights, Parabolics, and chrome mesh behind it all(such as front VRX holes and grill). and getting eyelids too. then mabey some VRX sideskirts.
man im in for a lot of work lol glad ive sourced/got most of these pieces.
i have a standard TF grill that was colour coded, and got mesh over the top of the vertical slits. i have a template if anyone wants it, it was tricky to get the right size drawn up.
i will have a dig around for some better pics

thanx, what is the BEM? and will i need to change my keys?, and while the engine is out what is the pricing for some ralliart cams? and a ECU to be reprogramed with VRX or ralli art map? might be able to squeze out 160-165KW? also with my straight through muffler.
will i have to change fuel pump or anything since its a bigger engine? or did they all use the same setup just with a larger engine?

my car has a power to weight ratio of 95.56KW per ton
the rada has 96.39, assuming its the lighter Ei
thats a difference of 0.89KW per ton, hardley "eating it up"

And 3.5L = ~280nm @ ~2000rpm up to 300nm @ 4000rpm vs 3.0L = 255nm at its highest point anywhere in the rev range.
Power schmower, torque is where the 3.5 eats the 3.0L.

Sorry to dig up an old quote:
Exactly. That's why the 3.5's only have a little more power but can cream and equivalent 3.0 by almost a second.
Torque wins races.
there's a saying that goes something like "torque wins races, horsepower sells cars" i think...

All Veradas KE onwards do. (KL/KW I have NFI)
Awesome thanks mate ;)
Why would you want to put a KF grille on a KH?
I believe what you want is the KH Xi grille. KE/KF all use the same grille regardless of Ei/Xi status, it has a chrome bit where yours is white, but the chrome on yours is gone and replaced with vertical black strips.
See Apollo441's profile for a pic of the KE/KF grille

back to my original question, what is a BEM? and will my keys need to be changed as well as all my locks?, can i get my key reprogramed, so i can still use the mecanical locks?
and if i get Ralli art cams or RPW stage ones, which ECU will i have to use?
will say a VRX ecu do both cams, or can i get my 147KW 3.5 ECU reprogramed at mitsubishi, i know i can go aftermarket biggyback, but thats worth over a thousand bucks. mabey a miniceptor would be appropriate? ive seen the kits at like $600, but does it then need to be tuned professionally or a plug in job?

lol good question, um because my car has done over 260,000KMS, and it will make it a lot harder to sell with soo many kms, and this engine and gear box has done a lot less, and when you say tiny bit of power, only 7kws more, doesnt sound like much, but drop in some stage 1 cams and a piggy back, with the straight through muffler that i allready have i recokon 165-170KWs, which is a fair jump in power,
im happy with the 3.0L very smooth revving engine, but it could use a little more power.
but yeah the Kms thing is one of the biggest reasons. plus im getting the whole car for free. not like im spending thousands on just the 147kw engine then spending more on the mods.
$2000 for a jump from 140KW to 170KW, thats pretty good bang for your buck.

KF Xi has leather standard...trust me. Its listed as standard on the spec sheets and its been in every KF Xi I've looked at. Pretty sure its been standard on the Xi since the KE, but I know for sure its standard in the KF Xi.
