View Full Version : Aircon help needed

When I have the aircon running it keeps turning itself on and off every 20 seconds or so. I can hear a click and often revs are raised by the idle controler. It's annoying and makes the car unpleasant to drive. (It's a manual)
The user manual says the aircon is only supposed to come on when it's needed, but I think this is a reference for cars fitted with climate control. Mine's an exec.
In my old TR you switched on the aircon and it stayed on. Any idea why this one is switching itself on and off all the time? And any hopefully cheap fixes?

yeah if u read in the owners manuals - i think u may have left it in Econo mode, which will cause it to do that, try leaving it in A/C

No it's doing exactly the same thing on both settings.

have it cheched out by an aircon place
may just be the climate control devices
or a faulty thermo fan switch

Umm im pretty sure thats completely normal, its the thermostat switching on and off. The air con needs to be at least a certain temp, and its not gonna run and waste power and fuel by running when it doesnt have to, so the thermostat makes it switch on and off.
Dunno why you think your old car didnt do it though, maybe it needed to be re-gassed, as it didnt run as cool, which meant the air con had to run all the time???

i think a regas could fix it. I think that if it goes and gets over pressure it will switch off, then the pressure will drop and it will come back on again.

What I'm experiencing is definately not normal. You shouldn't be aware of the aircon compressor cutting in and out twice a minute. The old TR always had very cold aircon and I was never aware of any automatic switching going on in either econ or full.
There's no climate control on either of these cars. I expect that if i switch the aircon on it will stay on until I turn it off.

This is interesting because I've noticed that the aircon isn't that cold now that summer's here so i suspect it needs a regas at least. Does anyone know what a regas is worth?

About $80-$100. I need to regas too, it pays to shop around.

Check the aircon fan relay. They burn out and produce this sort of problem.
Often you can see the plastic round the terminals has been heated and slightly scorched.
Test by substituting a relay from another circuit.

That'd be in the main fuse box in the engine bay?
