Hello!

I finally managed to get my registration to work on here after a lot of trying for some reason.

Anyway my initial intent was to post about a nice two-tone metallic grey TN Elite I picked up at the wreckers for my partners first car.

It has power everything and the dial climate control (still working).

However...
Today I got a nasty shock.

This morning it was running just fine. I actually started it to observe the magnetic clutch on the Magnas aircon to compare to the Falcons non working aircon.

Thisafternoon I thought I'd try to get the windows working a little happier. After I had liberated 1.5 windows I thought I'd better start it to charge the battery for a bit.

It started just fine, ran like a pig for a little bit and died. Every subsequent attempt resulted in it starting, running roughly for less time than the last and dying.
It's possible the fuel gauge (digital) is out of whack and its just out of petrol. It is currently showing 2 bars. Something I'll be checking with a jerrycan ASAP, which may be tomorrow.
Anyway, if it isn't something this simple, what could it be?
I really have to get this car up to roadworthy status in the near future and am worried about things like this.

Incidentally it looks like both motor and auto had recentish major work. The car even sports a totally new fuel rail, injectors and other shiny bits.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. She's really down about this development.

Thanks.

I too have just picked up the two tone metallic grey Elite! Welcome to AMC.

I'd say the gauge may be out of whack, unfortunately, it's common with the first gen Magnas. Whack at least another 10 litres in, and see if it'll start then. I've discovered the hard way that the car needs a significant amount of fuel in the tank to start, more than if it's already running.

when you buy something at a wrecker it would not be uncommon
to put bits and pieces of cars working parts togeather from several cars

steam cleaning an engine and gearbox works wonders

find a haynes /factory repair manual when you can

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40090

check the alternator that is is an 85 w and the regulator is working
use a large battery in the elite because of all the electronics they have
the rear windows work on a powered wire and electric motor pully system

pm me if you have automatic problems

Sorry, never been good with multiquotes, So I'll say Hi Gav! and thanks. Fuel will be my first thing to try. I haven't put fuel in it since purchase.

The card for sale at the wrecker are actually the cheaper cars from another dealership in town.

I know what you mean about the steam cleaning and bits from other cars, but there are definitely a lot of new parts and signs of a lot of maintenance and work. It even came with its logbook. Oh yeah, It's only done a shade over 190 000 km.

I'll try to go through and check everything mentioned. But I can tell you it has a big battery that seems to be in good condition. The car tuns over brilliantly, and would start perfectly every time.

Already been looking on eBay for a manual for it. I like to have them for any car I work on.

Thanks for the tip on the power windows. I'm going to pop the trim and see what I can do after the big problem is sorted.

I'd like to get this sorted as the Elite drives beautifully, and makes a perfect learners car.

Thanks!

Yeah, they're good to teach learners in, if you see in the thread Chop my car, in Photoshop arena, mine's currently wearing L-plates.

I think he meant more along the lines of learning the mechanics of and so on...but I could be wrong lol

She was just a tad thirsty. Gave it 10L of the good stuff and fired right up.

And I did mean to learn in, but mech work... now that's a really good idea!

Thanks again.

For the fun future reference. TN sedans like about 10l of fuel in the tank to start. Fuel cans carry 5 litres of fuel. The servo usually is about a good half hour walk away.

Oh, a question for you. Where does your oil pressure gauge read when the car's idling, and up to temperature?

Off the top of my head...

At idle I believe the oil pressure sits maybe 2 bars from the top of the gauge.

The temperature is dependent on aircon.

I've noticed that the thermo fans can be sitting idle, and the second I turn on climate control the thermo fans kick in.
When it's left running for a while the temp seems to stabilise at between the first mark and two above.

I usually keep a 10L plastic jerrycan handy. but yeah I know what you mean about running out of fuel. Most of the servo cans are 5L, which can be a pain.

I do know I need to replace the radiator cap. The rubber is junk. But it doesn't seem to have any real issues with anything I think.

I'll try to put up a pic I took of it as an avatar tomorrow.

EDIT:
There we go. An avatar pic of it :)
