what cam upgrades are available for street use, how have they performed for low-end torque, midrange, top-end, idle quality, noise, and fuel consumption, also prices?
..GONE..

RPW have aftermarket performance cams Stages 1,2 and 3. Stage one will perform best with mild mods, Stage 2 need extra bits and pieces and Stage 3, I think are pure drag cams.. not sure though..
I'll point Mitsiman(RPW Guy) to this thread and then he will give you the full run down on them.

cams would be the last thing you'd touch.
work on; (and in a sensible list accordingly do the mods in the following order)
-muffler
-extractors
-throttle body
-piggy back computer
-port polish
-THEN Cams + pistons at same time ;)
the cams will only work at their full potential if everything else flows smoothly. no point putting it in if you havnt done the other flowing mods, cos you will see NO improvement.
work on the basic's first ;)

PS. i just though id add, ive got over 230hp at the wheels, and im still running the stock cams, degreed tho. peek power is now 7000rpm, so really there is no need for cams. (yes, ill replace my cams as soon as crow cams get off their ass and make me some  )

I have done all those, looking to cam as next step. I hear stock bottom end is tough enough though so shouldnt need pistons for mild grind.

YOUVE DONE WHAT
mate, i think you better shed some light on your car 8)
youve done porting? polishing?
what computer you running? you got a manual or auto?

Engine has, K&N rampod and scoop, 65mm throttle body, Greddy ECU, FSE fuel pressure reg, and Wildcat extractors, (no port and polish sory), understand the heads already flow well dynoed 170hp at wheels (3.0L on 39deg day)
Im not sure what u mean by having your stock cams "degreed", sounds like it might be a good cheap alternative to new ones?

degreeing the cams is kinda like overclocking a computers CPU.
you 'degree' them like change the position etc of the cams so they run a different 'profile'
umm..er... yer, kinda hard to explain. but yes, with the degreed cams degreed in my car, it still pulls bloody hard all the way to 7000rpm!!! weeeeee..!!!

A set of stage 1 camshafts improve the power of the car across the board with no particular focus on any area. More of a general gain everywhere.
Stage 2 requires valve springs and is more mid range / high rpm.
We keep the cams in stock all the time generally although the 3.0 cams do vary in design to the 3.5 cams so you can't interchange them.
The greddy would need to be recalibrated and retuned but otherwise that is the only option I am afraid.

Well, I'd say degreed cams has really just changed the intake and exhaust timing. Overclocking the CPU would be more like advancing the timing which would have been done with an ECU upgrade, i.e. Haltech, Greddy, Unichip etc).

I reckon I will go with a stage 1 ugradethen , have had mild ones b4 on old ford and valiant carby engines and worked great right through from idle to redline.
, just worried about upsetting the oxygen sensor, idle quality, smoothness, end economy on the EFI ECU controlled modern engine, and how much gain I will actually get, as its looking at around 1'500$ fitted.
I would love to come on a cruise, when, where?

Hey, fella. Any chance for a look at a chart? Any idea how much torque the car is putting out?
Altera98

have dyno graph but cant post it on, it shows peak of 215 Nm at wheels at 4'300, about bang on where the stock motor produces peak. However from the graph you can see a bit of a hole below about 3'200rpm and thats how it feels to drive. Greddy ECU improved it a lot though. The dyno was done on a 39C day on regular unleaded, so I reckon it would be around about 240 on better conditions.

Ahh... okay. Well, a few of us are waiting until Winter for some dyno runs. Hope you get a chance to do the same so we can have a squiz at your chart.
It's funny how torque gets quoted in different quantities. I've seen charts saying 3000N or 750N and it's hard to compare. I think that's why lotsa people like to quote power figures. How's your air/fuel ratios looking?

dont know about the mixtures im afraid, never got that info back. tho i reckon a lot of the problem was lean running due to the fact that gettin more air made it worse, and the programmable piggyback ECU brought it back smooth as silk.

Trivia:
Cam degrees - full rotation (circle) is 360 deg as we know. Cam degrees indicate the timing of valves being open etc by means of rotation degrees. The longer they are open, the larger the degree figure - basically. Hence the word "hot rod", pleny of degrees, as in heat degrees even though they are actually totally different degrees.
Another relevant thing in a cam shaft is the lift. So, hot rod (cam shaft) lifts higher and keeps valves open longer for improved breathing/performance.
Some companies fill and grind std cams to make them hotter like that. Big mistake to use them! Crappy dodgy bros stuff. 8)

Coming from someone who got a Haltech before doing any of the other mods
I seem to remember telling you the same words booya :p lol

remember that the Power-chip is as a basic 1st and last mod and thats sold for totally stock engines, and this will get very little change from a grand. The haltech could do the exact same thing as a similar starting point...plus more later as your requirements grow.

Yeah the powerchip isnt designed for people who wish to continue modifying...it's designed for people who have a stock car and wish to get a bit more out of it (and a lot more out of their pocket!!)
It all really depends on how much you want to modify as to what order you do the mods in
