sub problem
i turned on my system today, and my sub is not working, checked all wiring and its all fine, amp lights up, but when i push on the cone of the sub it kicks back in again, then when i stop pushing on it it cuts out again after a few seconds.
very strange
its a Alpine S type 12 inch, only 4months old

Check the terminal posts on the sub, and also the tinsel wire (wire that connects from the sub cone coil to the terminal..

The sysmptoms you are describing are a textbook case for either a coil short or the tinsel being faulty and making a n open circuit. This is usually due to overexcursion, which can cause undue stress on the connecting wires to your sub cone...

Test it by hooking the sub up so you can touch the tinsel wires (obviously with an insulated rod or sumfin). Play a tune at low levels (even in free air if you need to), and see if moving the tinsel leads just by themselves affects the subs sound output. If it does then your tinsel wires need to be fixed.

seems to me like you have over driven your sub. I should know, I have done it a few times.

My advice is to go buy other one when it comes on special because a re-cone kit will be $$$.

What amp are you running it off?

Especially for a type S, they're only just the beginners range and are in the sub300wrms region so it would be very easy to punch it with too much power.

No point in re-coning as they're a cheap sub to begin with (do they even bother repairing them???), perhaps this time buy something with a better power rating and take this as a lesson to make sure to set your levels right and not to over do it when your amp is stronger than the speaker it's pushing. DD time ;)

thanx guys, my amp is 3/4 the rated power of the sub, with the gains set to 3/4 with minimal bass boost, i had a cheap clarion, running at higher gains and higher bass boost and i clipped it, which lasted a year, so this time i bought a more expensive sub and turned down the gains, and its only lasted 4 months, but yeah ill check the wiring in the box, (sealed box) so i gota open it up and check it, i put up a multi-meter and it was reading infinate resistance (ie open circuit),

It is Alpine no offence....

Why dont you get a more powerful amp run it safely??

i was told it would be sufficent, and its not like i had the gains to the max, alpine isnt that bad, stinger, venom, fusion, xplod, they are pretty crappy ones

looks like one of the coils, had a connection problem, so its coverered under warrenty

Good news then!!! I was thinking it was a connection problem, as the symptoms you described matched a -faulty connection/loose wiring/dry solder joint- type problem... :D

so it was factory problem, cos im gettin a full alpine type S system in ma car, Splits, 6x9s, subs an amps...

Yeah sounds good, I wonder why the connection came lose? Heat perhaps? :D

At least you are getting it done as warranty. Wonder how long they will take to re-cone it?

Hrm - I cant comment on all but the Fusion one's.

Currently have a Fusion Powerplant 12" - I didnt know a sub that produces crystal clear bass is 'pretty crappy'

Even on paper, fusion subs either match, or come out ahead based on theile/small parameters.

You should never measure a subs ability on the T/S. If you do that even the Alpines look good and the DD's look boring.....

Got the same sub for the g/f car, sounds ok. Not bad for $70 but then again what do you expect...

True - as t/s parameters can only tell you so much, and cant predict how a driver will react (apparantly, drivers regardless of t/s parameters have 'charecteristics' which cant be measured).

However - t/s parameters aside, im pretty impressed with my fusion - crystal clear bass.....couldnt really ask for more.

took it back to the dealer, they said i should have it back, within a week, they said alpine is pretty good with this sort of thing.
