Hi guys
Thought I'd show off my fully awesome (cough) 93 TR sedan I've had for 2 years, known to my friends as the fagna or grandpacar.
Now that I've got some cash to throw at the Magna I'm planning a few mods (KS Verada paras already here, in the middle of doing up the grille), just wanted some advice on new rims (current wheels are 14" stockies that saw the gutter wayy to many times in my learner days ) and also if theres anything worthwhile doing with the engine - engine being a lousy 4 cyl carby, which is OK on fuel and not much else lol

LOL what can i say it's a bone stock magna!
it'll look nicer with some exterior enhancements like wheels, diamante front bar, tint etc.
not a fan of the 4 cyl series... how's that engine of yours? running well or sounding like a tractor? if the car or engine has problems i advise you to sell this one and upgrade to a v6
don't waste money on a 4 cyl
if i were you and had to stick with the car i'd upgrade to a series I diamante/sigma front bar with aero lip, leave the stock headlights, change the side indicators to KS verada orange ones then swap your grille for one off a 1991 sigma estate
the japanese sigma pictured below goes to show that all you need on your australian magna are some minor exterior upgrades and you can make your car look a lot better and give it that unique "import" look
oh and bugger off the parabolics - everyone has them now
be unique
p.s some nice 17" wheels will be a good start
nothing too big either

yeah I know, completely stock atm but soon I'll get around to installing parras and the grill.
Engine idles fine, its done 197k and hasn't caused me a single problem yet *touch wood*
A V6 would be awesome but my cars worth sweet *** all so I don't really want to sell it plus it seems bloody hard to find any V6 manuals.
The Enkei 17" ralliarts suit your Sigma nicely, reckon they'd suit the TR?
EDIT: That front bar looks great, I smell a wreckers visit.

Paint looks alright there... how the roof and boot lid paint going?
Definitely go for the Sigma look if you can. From stock it's just a grille and a front bar away, and it makes a world of difference to the look of the car when it's done. More aggressive look, nobody will call it a "grandpacar" afterward. :)

definitely! in my opinion these are the best looking wheels and being enkei's they are a renowned and respected brand
i actually got the idea off AJ (gotrice)
after you upgrade your wheels have your springs lowered just enough to have the wheels covering the ugly gaps in the fenders and your car will look 100% better
p.s i edited the above post so you might want to re-read that :D

Thanks dimi! There happens to be a set not far from me in the FS section so I'll check em out.
magna91: The paints probably the best part of the car atm lol, no peeling or other ugliness. Gonna start looking for a Sigma/Diamante front bar - what can I expect to pay for one?
dimi108
10-11-2007, 05:05 PM
for a sigma/diamante front bar anywhere from $200-$300 depending on where you look

*gasps and falls over*
I was looking to do this as well dimi... didn't know i'd be looking at these price figures though. Maybe i'll put it off for a while or just hope I find one discounted. :P

i remember greg (2speedy) grabbed one for $60 at pick n payless
it depends on the place and who is selling it to you
if they don't know crap all about the rarity of the bars and think it's just for a "tr magna" you'll get it dirt cheap
but most places sell them for a minimum of $200
if you're bothered you will find one at a nice price but you have to call around and do your research - they won't just pop up on ebay :)

yeah it's kinda hard to justify spending $200 on a front bar for a car worth $2000, not to mention all the other stuff. Pain in the wallet to be unique these days
But meh, at least it looks good

$200 youd be lucky to buy it in crap condition for that much, let alone painted/fixed up
dimi108
10-11-2007, 05:23 PM
LOL yeah series II bar was $365 plus $200 painting
Magna91

I'll call around a bit, see what prices I can get. Don't mind if the paint is in crap condition because it'll probably get a respray anyway. (DIY job of course, I know, i'm cheap :P)
$200 on a $2000 car doesn't really seem practical unless you're really keen about the car you're driving. Depends what your opinion of a 4-cyl Carby TR is.
the first thing i would be doing would be a fuel injection conversion. then do some visual modes

wtf is it a carby?
i missed that part
damn...
ummm
sorry man but upgrade to a v6
don't be wasting time doing EFI conversions LOL sif wen you can get v6's for under $900 with rego
depends how much money you are looking to spend. putting the 6 in will be a bit more pricey but much beter

gee, you boys seem to think V6's grow on tree's ive looked all around adelaide and the only cheap ones i could find were in the 250k & above kms range & still costing 2K as well - lest i have better luck in the wreckers...
yes & anyone in adelaide who is selling a v6 plz, plz, plz send me a msg (i will pay good money for a decent engine) - my ****ty 4cyl is rattles-central & not worth spending any money replacing it.
P.S.- I will consider interstate if anyone can recommend wreckers to call, thx

I would do exterior mods first. Wheels and lowering, and possibly an exhaust, thats it.
Save the money for a V6.
AJ, KB, Dimi, and me have all had V6's and for a few thousand have absolute beasts (Well the first two of them have anyway!)
Spending money converting the 4cyl to EFI, then to possibly a V6 is stupid.
Just do exterior/interior mods which can be carried over car to car, then transfer them all over to the other car when you get a V6.
Clear side indicators - $22 - Excellent visual mod
Elite/Verada rear lights/ garnish - Under $100 usually, another cheap and effective mod.
KS grille perhaps?
Just small simple things man.
Unless you really really like 4cyl's id be saving for the V6 Variant.

I've seen a couple of V6 SOHC's over at U-Pull-It, if you haven't looked there already. Not sure of their total kms but some haven't done too bad, 160,000 or so on one I saw. Price shouldn't be too steep there either hopefully, but the only way to find out would be to call them and ask.

Sell your four cylinder and go to the six, or a third gen even.
Not worth spending money to 'create' an EFI astron, then upgrade to a 6G72 which requires a new ECU loom and ECU... Madness.
Third gens are cheap and plentiful, look newer too.

Madness? THIS IS MAGNAAAAAAA!
Meh @ people (like me) who don't 'want to go through so much trouble'... If you want it enough, do it, don't ask opinions! When i wanted to convert my car to V6, all I could get was "just buy a V6 or third gen V6." Fact of the matter is, it's just not worth it in these cars unless you're going for something really crazy like the 6G72/74 DOHC.

Just make sure to properly inspect the motor before taking it, there's quite a few that are working and complete, but i've seen a couple that have parts already taken from them that aren't completely obvious at first. As with any car part, you don't want a dud. ;)

HAHAHA LOL @ two convos happening
if i had a 4 cyl i'd do an astron turbo swap... i reckon that would be cool
even thought it might not go that hard it'll still be alright eh?
what you planning on doing to yours lucy?

Only two? Normally we have 3 or 4. lol
It might not go that hard, but it'll still smoke out a fair few other cars on track day. I've seen stock Sigma's running the quarter mile... a turbo Astron would eat it alive.
