Hey All,
Just wondering if anyone knows where i could get some custom pistons with rings made for a good price. Preferably much less then $1500...more around $1200 would be a better figure...
Regards,

What's the application? For an n/a build apprarently you can get ACL 10:1 Pajero pistons for $600 (thanks EGO), for boost you'll want forgies for around the $1500 mark (ask TZABOY)

on a reasonably stock car, would you notice much diff with the Pajero 10:1 pistons??

Tuned properly..
Yes. BUT, you would need 98 Ron Fuel, but you would have more torque and better fuel ecconomy...

so no point without a piggy back then?

i reckon even without the piggy it would be benificial. but you could get even more with the piggy.

I'm only guessing here, but I wouldn't think it would be safe upping the compression by that much without adjusting the ignition timing to suit. Running higher octane fuel would make it more safe, but I don't know if it would be enough. You would need to talk to a performance tuner, but yeah - I'm guessing its a mod that needs some form of aftermarket engine management system.
for boost you'll want forgies
Depends on how much boost, but I've been told that hypertuneric(sp?) pistons are more than strong enough to go the distance with a moderate boost application (assuming you go with a nice boost friendly compression ratio), and at roughly half the cost. The only thing you can't do with hyper pistons is pump NOS thru the engine.

From their website: JP Pistons are manufacturers of pistons for vintage, veteran and classic motor cars, motorcycles, trucks and stationary engines. If you are looking for a piston replacement for your restoration project or are interested in how we make pistons then this is the spot.
Hardly sounds like the best mob to talk to about making custom pistons for a magna motor.

What about a pajero ECU? with the higher comp pistons?
What standard comp on a V6?

I highly doubt a pajero ECU could be swapped into a magna without major rewiring work. If it could be done, it would probably cost at least as much, if not more to install as a piggyback ecu, so you're only really saving the cost of the piggyback ECU ($600 - $700 isn't that much).
*edit* standard compression on a 3.5L v6 is 9.0:1 (9.5:1 for Ralliart V6)
Here's some advice.......... you can't mod magnas for performance on the cheap*.
*unless your name is JasonsVRX, in which case you will spend the next 5 years machining, fabricating and rebuilding in your spare time.

Has any1 tried? they would be the same, they do the same stuff. the 4wd fact would be controlled by somthing else. Like you said "U Doubt it"
I would nearly bet thet it has the same plug on it! Smae motor, same manufacturer....
Just like the pistons fit the SAME block! Just designed for more torque! Maybe i'm talkin out my bum...?

I wouldn't do it without a piggyback, it makes no sense to go to the trouble of raising compression and then not having managment to suit. Given the error of margin in factory tunes, you'd probably get away with it, but that doesn't mean it'll be anywhear near ideal. At the very least I'd put it in a dyno to check for detonation.
The reason the ralliart was 9:5.1 static CR as so it could use 91 RON. 10:1 or higher allows you better take advantage of higher RON fuels (i.e better gains than simply dialling in a bit more ignition timing). You'd generally find with 10:1 or higher CR on 91 RON, you'd have to pull the timing back a heap, and lose out on power and economy. E.g poor 91 RON into a new high-comp motor and watch what happens.

it would be nice to know if a top end rebuild with such 10.1 pistons would produce.
people keep taking about this computers capabilities to compensate to some extent.
would this not be in it's RANGE? the motor does run without detonation in a pajero on standard fuel and gives more? Go figure?
Is this no different to SHAVING the heads a few thou?
New turbos are comming out with 10:1 comp and running 10psi?

I would nearly bet that it's different. Manual and Auto 3rd gen magnas have different ECU plugs on them.

Yep.. ACLs in mine. They are the same ones they fit to Pajero. They are 10:1 compression and a few other things im sitting on 12:1 Compression currently.. Car has gone to the doctors today...:( Lots of stuffering around once you start ****ing with the motors to much. Hopoefully it will be all better when i get it back and we finally start getting some decent power out of my biatch..:)
Why do you need custom pistons alex.. u do to much talking about mods..:P
Start doing some mate. your falling behind..:P

12:1 - thats crazy. What are you trying to do - rebuild for LPG only performance??

why not go the whole hog and whack some dohc pajero heads on it as well.
yes they do exist in oz, just not too common. Custom cams, larger exhaust valves, piggy back ecu.......i'm gettin horny!

But its fun though! lol
Seriously ya are right though, if ya prepared to spend time researching/designing and developing then just about anything is doable. If not then my advice is dont do it ,just stick to ya basic mods and be done with it.
oh and its actually 9.4:1 compression for the ralliart. :)

12:1 static CR isn't outrageous with big cams. Remember static CR is one thing, dynamic compression depending on your cam profile etc is another.
I.e big cams "bleed off" compression at low rpm, so your dynamic compression actually isn't that high, and you need nigher static CR to make up for this. There's a reason why we can't just chuck big cams into a motor with stock 9:1 static CR:P
Ego: what have you done to end up with 12:1 CR with 10:1 pistons? My understanding is with our magna heads we can only shave them around 1mm at most? (forget why this is).

Not sure what was taken off the heads. was a good chunk though. Also there was some taken off the block too i think. i didnt think my compression was that high either till today..:)

If you take too much off the heads you change the cam timing, so you need adjustable cam gears.. This is what happened in my civic...
