I am currently running single pioneer 4 inch speakers in the Execs stock location, and would like to add some beefier speakers in the rear. i was thinking in the hatch door, is this feasible or should i drop the idea and go for the roof mount (which is still hidden in the roof lining), or possibly the boot side panels. if it is possible whats the largest speaker that would fit, 6 inch? (i was really just thinking how cool it would be to have some music pumping then open up the boot to share the sound as this would reselt in the speakers lying outside the body of the car.)
Thanks Stormie

When I had the 2G Wagon rear speakers fitted, the guys doing the install recommended the rear sides of the wagon area as the best spot.
Works well but could do with some angled spacers to push the sound forward a bit.

Stormie ive got a 2nd gen wagon too, just got the stockies in the roof though, but might upgrade one day. Since you have put those 4 inch pioneers in, can you give me an idea what the biggest size speaker, in diameter and depth, would fit? ive got some entrl level 5 1/4 inch focal splits in the front at the moment, would really like to fit them in the roof, otherwise I will have to look elsewhere.

Some people have also made the speaker stick out from the roof, then wrap the whole orginal speaker grille and new speaker in a speaker cloth material, looked pretty good. might be an option also.

Be aware that the metal cutouts behind the side panels are asymetrical; I couldn't find a way to mount speakers evenly on both sides, what holes there are are in different locations on the two sides.

I'm just running 6x9's in some home-made pods that bolt to my barrier. The blind pulls over the top of them, so it's definitely not ideal, but I rarely have anyone in the back seat, and it adds the required fill and bass to the rear. 6" in front door pods helps too. One day I'll get around to throwing a small subbie in the boot.

my dad had a toyota 4runner, i know it's not a magna but it had the same wagon shape as what you're talking about. He had 6x9's in the back just on the side panels. He only spent i think 100 or 150 on the 6x9's but he spent 350 on the 6.5 splits at the front. Because the 6x9's weren't directed anywhere, it gave a really good thumping bass sound but he still had the quality sound from the 6.5's at the front. It's just an idea so yeh

So you reckon i wont be able to fit speakers into the hatch door?(thats the general feeling i get from the replies) and instead recommendi put some in the side panels, since i refuse to have boxed speakers as i change the configuration of the boot too often for it to be practical.
Opilot i didnt do the four inch install myself left it to the pros but i can give you the dimensions of the speakers they put in there- does 4.3 cm deep sound right? and it was installed without the grill on since the dash already has that grill part obviously. anyway it was the pioneer TS-G1041R should give you an ok idea though i dont think there was much spare room.

Ooops didnt read ur post propery, that figure sounds right, but I thought you put them in the back where the orginal speakers were. I reckon that spot is best for SQ, but not too sure how big a speaker you could fit in there.

i got 6x9 in the boot kick panels tried putting them in back door but had a look and thought **** that on the other side of the kick panel mount a large thick mdf panel with sikaflex and the speaker hole screws (use f clamps to get it secure) it will make the speaker solid mounted and better sound

I thought that speakers were stock placement in the tailgate on some 3rd gen wagons (they were there in one I thought of buying once).

It's where I was planning to put extra speakers...
