Just out of curiosity - how much did people who completed the 2.6L -> 3.0L conversion pay (a) for the Engine, & (b) for labor to install - also if anyone can recommend a mechanic in SA for this type of job would be much appreciated, thanks Macha.

try between $2000 and $2500
from a TR 4 cyl to a TR V6
before you add
the cost of the full engine /gearbox /driveshafts/front stub axle and brakes
then the front under dash and all engine bay electrical loom has to be replaced
mounts /exhaust / computer controllers/coil/ radiator ?
better to buy a donor car or a half cut
for that you gain more horsepower slight fuel consumption improvement
would advise trading in current car and buy a V6

Dude - i really appreciate the effort in the responses, but consider that (a) ive never done anything like it before, (b) i dont have the right tools & equipment (c) the only person i know who is familiar with magna's is to busy working, caus if i was going to attempt this i know i would need someone experianced guiding me through it.
So it looks as thou i might just have to stick with a recon'd 4cyl, as i cannot sell the car - due to it having a rattling timing chain as well as needing its valve stem seals replaced.
Otherwise if there is some course in mechanics that you would recommend i do - that would qualify me to be able to begin do this type of work than by all means plz tell me, as i actually would't mind learning.
Aside from that does anyone recommend any particular mechanic that they might have been throu to have a similar job done, here in SA - thanks

The other problem is that the L/H engine mount is in a different locaton therefore if you look at 2.6 engine bay and a 3.0 one the L/H inner guard is totally different from the V6
I'd recommend having a chop at a 4G63BT conversion ;)

Yep I was the first lol, been checking out a 4G63T conversion instead but there doesn't seem to be a huge improvement from what I've seen (correct me if I'm wrong Nick).
Looks like theres a place not far from me in Brissie offering VR4 Galant half cuts (site is http://www.japparts.com.au/products/stock-arriving.html) - check it out if you want to look down that path.

sorry to threadjack, would anyone know if these (4G63T's) fit into a CB Lancer?
OP: Dude, unless you're doing a DOHC conversion, don't bother unless ou find everything needed for a FULL conversion at a reasonably low price.

do a search... 4cyl to dohc like not much more than 4cyl to sohc and alot more go ie my sohc 115hpatw to 167hpatw. I need a new clutch. should get it TT soonish. Speaking to my mate with gto who's upgrading turbos right now.
But 4cyl to 6cyl = pain in the ass.

Sorry guys but just how do you expect me to honestly sell this car in the state its in? - so here 's what i shall do... the local Ultratune have quoted me bout $900 to fix up timing chain, so i'll just pay to get it fixed. And stuff the conversion, & as for buying another one, well unless someone can show me an ad for a V6 magna with less than 200k on it for like $2K - then well i might just buy it.
However searching the trading post, carsguide, carsales & even ebay - they all were like aleast $3K with more than 200klicks on them, so yah i'm just going to do the best to repair it for now unless those V6's that grow on threes for $2k with low kms come around

Stop bitching about your rattling timing chain, we all know that a car sounding like a tractor isn't worth much. However, your consideration of a V6 conversion which would cost at least $2000 - $3000 worth of motor, labour and other parts and accessories could be put towards a working V6 Magna with RWC and rego already on it.
Be patient, not everyone wants to sell their magna at any given time... Don't act so offended that people are discouraging you either. Take advice champ.
I got my V6 manual for $1900 with almost 6 months rego, RWC and 170xxx on the clock and it's still going.. Although on the year and a bit I have put a fair bit into it to get it back to REASONABLE condition
