Hey guys and gals

yesterday , well last night i picked up a 1993 TR Elete, 4cly, power everything. the car has done 194680 i'm the 3rd owner. 3 weeks rego :badgrin: . its not bad i supose.

2 problems with are:

The auto is stuck in 3rd- i'mm going to have a look at it this arvo, any advise and yes i have a search.

There is a smaill oil leak at the back of the motor, but the oil is black as the ace of spades and it doesn't blow any smoke.

the only reaseon why i brought it was because of the power windows and climate controll. if i get the tranny going,ill spend a bit on it and sell it if not. ill get the parts that i want and sell it to the wreckers.

Looks pretty good man, I dunno if I'd go to the trouble of trying to fix the tranny tho when you've already got your car. If you take off what you want and part out the rest on here, you'll probably finish up getting back what the car cost you or close enough to it.

Don't think your likely to have trouble selling stuff like the rear lights and garnish which I presume you don't want.

Yup sounds like it could be the TCU, they can go around this age. If it's not the TCU it'll be something much worse.

if tis stuck on 3rd dosnt that mean its on limp mode???

my grandfather once brought a Barina GSI with the hipo 1.6L for basically nothing cos the engine was stuffed bit of smoke and ran terrible..... other than that the car was great.... i realized the 2 & 3 spar leads were on the wrong plugs lol, swapped them around and the bugger was as good as new!!!

my point....

none really lol

but it could be something as simple as that, then its a great car polish it and flog it off for 3k!

thanks for all the comments guys, the guy i brough it off wanted $900 for it i offered him $400 and then he said $500. i sent him an sms later taht night say i've only got $400 and he said come around in 10 mins and pick it up

the tranny fluid is kinda red, its got a bit of black in it.

the drives smothley no rattles, no smoke from the exhurst. i'm going to try a ecu reset this arvo see what that does.

if i get enough intrest ill part it out

every1 seems 2 have had a 2nd gen thats stuck im limp mode. $200-$300 for a 2nd hand TCU.

limp mode .. yeah mine goes to that after it either gets hot or i hammer it.. the oil in mine is getting darker by the day. I currently only have 1st and 3rd gear. I'm trading mine in so its not an issue atm

for one from a wrecker / fit it and test it before you drive too far
if it diesnt work get another or your money back:D

ok guys, done a reset yeaterday and didn't do a thing so it got the ****s with it and started pulling the powerwindows out (the back 2 are currentley in my car he he, thanks RoGuE_StreaK).

with the rest of the car if someone wants to come and get it after i am done with it we can work out a price etc..

I was having a look through the workshop manual for you last night and came across the problem you are having, it basically was about 3 pages on why it was stuck in 3rd but I fell asleep lol. Are you still having the problem because I can find it again tonight and let you know if you like?

update on power window conversion. i only managed to get the drivers on installed yesterday, the door loom was a bit harder to take out than i though it was

No probs dude, ill have a squiz tonight if i remember or ill run it buy the guys 2morrow night and nut it out :D

Does anybody on this forum actually have any idea what causes the second gens to switch to limp mode. fault in TCU, tranny or other?
It seams to come standard with the 2nd gen cars. Heres a curly one. Can a Magna running in limp mode be registered?

Yes, capacitor leaks and the fluid is extremely corrosive and will eventually burn the board, it just simply stops

It is not in limp mode as such more than it is stuck in drive as it relies on the TCU to tell it to change back to sencond and first, OD ect.

Older transmissions have a governer that will allow fluid to be directed arond the valve body to select particular gears, electronic trans use solonoids to do the same, they will default to 3rd and then solonoids will change the course of the fluid. THis is a very high level explaination of how it all works, is a lot more involved

well reved it to 4grannd and droped it into reverse :bowrofl: and then done the smae this but into drive, i have never hear the loudest clunk in my life, it wss fun though. it actually started to change gears then. oh well :bowrofl:
