ok ... here is the deal ... she's stuffed and i have no idea why

about a week ago i noticed less acceleration ... sure i'd been giving it the odd hammering off the line in my first weeks so i'm thinking "i'm just more used to the power" ... this isn't so ... over the course of the night she has died, i have no torque and it takes me a good 5 sec to get to 20 ... and every gear in low RPM does nothing

The past few days/week there has been litle responsivness but i let it slide under the thoughts of above ... but now i'm panic stricken at the thought that within the 3 weeks that i've been driving i've killed my baby and to a lesser extent having to ask m parents for money to fix the car after they have givin me a extremly extended loan for the car iself while i folow through with tafe and uni.

i apologise about the long post but as i said to my mate when i dropped him off, i'm heartbroken. but to the point, does anyone have any suggestions about what the problem is and if not where is a good cheap (slightly contradictory there) mechanic in S/E melbourne

ps. i have a 96 exec manual V6 and she was serviced only a monh ago and had a new radiator put in. also a mate and i have recently run amp wiring to the boot (though his should have done nothing)

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out

So the revs climb at the normal rate but the car doesn't seem to move? At which point do you pick up power/speed? Any noises? Any smoke out the exhaust?

ok ... she will rev to her hearts content and just crawl ... you start to get power around 3-4000 RPM but it has to skyrocket to about 5-6000 and then drop back before it starts to slowly speed up

It sounds like you fried your clutch being a manual tranny.

yeh thats possible (the clutch) when you only rev slightly does it seem to accelerate better? and also when you accelerate hard can you sort of feel it slipping? if yes then this sounds a lot like the clutch.

mate, if your car is revving really hard and you aren't going anywhere then you should get you clutch checked out, as pointed out above.

Clutch for sure. If you stab the throttle while your moving, and you don't accelerate much or at all then 99% sure its your clutch.

OK my mum has looked into quote for me and prices have ranged from about 800-1500 ... mitsu quoted 1040 with genuine parts and less with non genuine

the question is, how good are these prices?

ps. i think it might just be the plate because my dads mate tried to adjust the positioning (was sitting too far apart) but the good ole designers decided it wasn't too be

What you have to think about at this point is how hard do you drive the vehicle because, and this is not an accusation but an admission of reality,

if you are driving it hard then the stock standard mitsubishi / aftermarket clutch is going to also go in a very short time frame again and you will be down anywhere between $700 - $1000.00 again

I would suggest you consider geting an upgraded clutch that will last longer as the fitting time is the same but the clutch itself will be the expensive part.

Get a semi ceramic paddle clutch unit so that you have a 50% stronger clutch with no extra pedal effort and much longer life span.

Just something to think about

what companies are there that sell semi-ceramic clutches???
i'm seriously considering this if they arn't much more expensive

i spoke to the manufacturer of the standard mitsubishi clutch and the guy told me that it is not possible o make a semi-ceramic clutch, and in fact they had NEVER made any form of upgraded clutch let alone heard of one. Tho they did say they could custom modify one ... but for an undisclosed price.

the guy also said that because of the design it has up to 20% more strength than clutch from other manufacturors, so i'm wondering if anyone here has needed to upgrade or am i wasting my time and money??

Funny when I have one!!

RPW makes them and I highly recommend it.

*** OFF TOPIC ***

Just out of interest, how many kms do most of you get out of a stock Mitsubishi clutch or any other type for that matter. I realise there are many different factors that may affect the total, so please fill in the answers below:

How do you drive (normally): (drag everyone I see or like a granny, etc, etc)
Type of clutch: (Genuine Mitsu, RPW, etc)
Kilometres:

How do you drive (normally): A bit lead footed, have to feather the clutch in reverse so it doesnt pop out and crunch like all hell
Type of clutch: Stock standard
Kilometres: It was replaced at about 260,000kms I think. Replaced with a RPW custom semi ceramic unit.

My magna runs a semi ceramic padle clutch disc with 8 paddles and 25% stronger cover plate. NO way a standard clutch would handle my hp.

I have also sold quite a few semi ceramic paddle clutches to the magna people in both TR/TS and the TE Range.

The later model magna vehicles are great because the clutch is so big it retains all of the stock driveability.

I'm so hap[py i could nearly dance (but no1 would like that as i'm a white guy) ... I GOT MY CAR BACK :D :D :D :D :D

i picked her up today and she is running beautifully, though i have noticed the clutch is alot lighter and once jumped back at meafter it had picked up and my foot was off, not sure if that is normal and will go away though.

The clutch is supposedly a stronger one, but not heavy duty as i couldn't get one in time or at the right price. The guy said we were mis quoted by $400 less than usual, but they had to keep to it :D:D:D

thanks everyone for your help and advice
