Hey guys,
Before you say anything i have done a search and just need abit of clarification. I know the factory says 5w30 but some on here have said it's abit too thin? And some say its ok.

Just about to do an oil change and wanted to know what you reckon?
I'm about to drive from Vic up to QLD, stay for approx 2 1/2 months and then drive back down again, so would a 10w40 be more suitable for the drive/QLD temps? The engine has done 80k kms. I find the 5w30 has abit of rattle when the car is cold, will the thicker oil help this without costing me power?

And lastly what brand/product of oil would you recommend in a 10w40? or whatever grade you're recommending? Around $30 a bottle max.

Cheers!

that viscosity of oil will be fine for those conditions, and i dont know the price but ive heard good things about penrite HPR10 which is 10w50 i believe.

10w-40 or 10w-50 i would say would be fine? As the last number would mean its a bit thicker when @ driving temp and doing those long drives the car will be under stress alot.

Also leigh i would buy some spare heater hose, a few clamps, a universal radiator hose, water, oil, and anything else you need in case the worst happens in the middle of no where, better to be safe then sorry

So penrite is recommended, any other brands?
Used shell helix in my TR which seemed to be alright.

i used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5w-50 in my TF with 185000km. No problems...

was using magnatec--------> sucks
changed to shell eco 10-----> was not bad
finally when i changed to shell ultra ------> perfect..
engine done 72Ks
for $30 i think mobil 10W-40 semi synth at around $32 bucks from repco is perfect for that price

sorry to hijack the thread..
but if i wanted a thicker oil (my TF makes too much noise on magnatec!!, it aint too good to my TJ either, time for a change) i might try the Shell ultra for the TJ (120ks)as suggested above
what oil should i use for my TF though (it's the 4cylinder model and has 165Ks on the clock)
thanks

i have also tried the Shell Helix Ultra Full Synthetic 5w-40 on the TF as well... found that the oil changed colour quicker as compared to the Mobil oil... but the engine may have a bit of build up when i used the shell oil prior to having an engine flush done then changing to Mobil 1

so the Shell Helix Ultra and Mobil 1... can't go wrong in my experience in my car. and the difference was about $10, with mobil being the expensive one

My suggestion...

First of all don't mix your synthetic oil, with your mineral oils...by mix I mean switching from one to another. If you do, you need to flush the engine. Better to stick to one.

Secondly for warmer/hot (read outback) climates use a mineral oil (natural) and up to 15W50

5w30 is for colder climate like in the snowy mountains. (read very cold climate, snow country)

After your long trip change your oil back to your normal oil.

As for brand name, it doesn't really matter...just get something with the correct approval seals on the package...go for the big name players.

Hope this helps.

Aright might give the mobil 10w40 semi synth a go then, seems to be a happy medium :).

Mobil 1 comes in 2 grades 5w-50 (approx $60) and 0w-30 (nearly $100) that i know off. They are both Full Synthetic Oil.
The Mobil Oil you may be refering to when you mention 10w-40 that is a Synthetic Blend Oil

that should be fine, used it once before, had no issues, just decided since i can afford mobil 1 i'll just use it coz i can, much the same as me running premium petrol on my 3rd gen...coz i can... but i cut down on expenses in other areas... in order to have the "coz i can"

the Mobil Syth S should be more and adequate for what you need to do...

I would stick with either Shell or Mobil. both are exceptional oils.

I don't like castrol oils except the synthetics ... missus used GTX2 and it was filthy inside...

I use Mobil 1 in my Evo and Shell in the Magna.

Both are very good oils... with a high detergent value to keep your engine clean, and always have the latest SAE grades when they are released.

FWIW, I'm in the aircraft industry (ground engineer) and the turbine engines I maintain and overhaul all use mobil oils.. (though it's a very different formulation and would melt all the rubber seals in a motor vehicle..... I know an apprentice that tried!!!

So yeah as long as you stick with what the manufacturer says to use in the handbook. Use the best you can afford!

I wouldn't advise to mix your oils. "oilz aint oilz Sol".
