*quick version*

small hole in magna (plastic petrol tank)

how to repair?

has anyone done it and what products can you recommend?

i know it can be done, and there is stuff over the counter i can buy...
(I'm going to get a new one, but this repair has to last till i can afford it)

all help greatly appreciated!

thanks

*useless info*
driving home due to roadworks and ring road at a stand still, i detour... driving down green gully rd (approx 11pm so its dark and there is no street lighting) i hit something small that was on the road, well i hit nothing not with the body or the wheels, something just flicked up and stabbed a hole in my pertol tank!

now i didn't know immediately, but it sounded like someone threw a spanner at my car lol...

anyway 500m later i smell fumes, but think its the old bomb going up the hill...

then its a hard right onto the freeway entrance, and the awd full on drifts....."TOKYO DRIFT STYLE"

luckily I'm a champion rally driver and power on without breaking a sweat... still smelling fumes, i instantly know what has happened! DAMN IT

pull off on the 1st exit duck into st near servo, jump out and see the fuel leaking out....AHHHH like i can afford this now!

quick decision.... leave the car in an industrial area in the middle of nowhere, or zip along to the Mitsu dealer just down the road? neither straight home it went....

no it sits on the street with a dry tank which was filled up to the top yesterday and driven less than 50km (there goes $100)

so who's butt can i kick? make the local council cough up some $$$ insurance claim, will they even cover it? Mitsubishi for having an exposed tank with not even a tin guard (other cars I've had have had a protective tin sheet)

damn! whats it going to cost to get a new AWD fuel tank?

I'll keep you posted

you should be able to shove a rubber plug into the hole maybe? how big is 'small' ?

Uh, I think Liquid Steel, or whatever it's called might patch it until you can replace it, or a lit match.

Do you know what struck the car? If you don't then there's no recourse, you're just going to have to deal, and hope those :rant:ing guys hurry up and fix the damn ring road.

I can also see why people compain about cars doing more than 200km/h down the Western Ring road. It's cause all the other ****ers are doing 10 below in the right lane!

not too big, 2/3rds of a 5c piece maybe!

nope but I'll bet its probably inside the bugger lol

it looks like it was shot! (been watching mythbusters)
but seriously i have no idea(possibly piece of steel), green gully road at the bottom of the ditch, i saw nothing on the road, and trust me I'm an expert at avoiding all road debris and potholes manholes bumps etc...

Epoxy Steel, like JBWeld or something will patch that, quite possibly for a long while.

Just use the merc as a tank, god knows they stink like grease and fuel anyway. Damned buckets of crap.

Just attach a tow rope and a hose into your fuel tank neck, use the siphon effect! Silicon up all the doors and any other cracks and rag-up the air con vents, sweet as!

i wish, no werckers anywhere here have an awd, and if they did, i'll bet the parts would be dearer than new!

i have a plan, i should buy a cheap awd and part it out, buy for 10k box and diffs etc.. are worth that 2nd hand... lol

This may sound silly to you, but it works....outback trick....

Temporary fix ( will last until you get it repaired, soon)

Take some soap, and scrap off flakes with a knife, add some fine dust, ash, etc what ever you can find, add water and mash it in your hands like putty. (then put in on your face...nah just kidding) it will turn into a soft putty like substance, push it over the whole. The petrol will not dissolve the soap. Its the only mixture that will stop the leaking. Make sure the area is clean so that the soap can attach, use duct tape or similar.

outback trick....Triggered a memory of the Bushtucker Man doing something on one show, I think it was something from a termite's nest, heated it up, whacked it on a hole on a Jerry can, went rock hard, permanently fixing the hole. I think it was some sort of naturally occuring resin.

Correct. Bush Tucker Man used boiled spinifex resin...my idea with the soap trick was from Jack Absalon's show, back in the 80's.

...By the look of the damage, it looks like you may have run over a long pipe/picket, the front wheel, as it ran over it, probably angled it upwards, and the car got spiked as you kept going.
...must of been a bit of fast off road driving :)

i wish then i would be to blame for being stupid!

(ahhh I'm stupid anyway, so it's most likely my fault... it probably was a fluffy duckling i tried to mow down.. and it's beak popped the tank)

thing is i was driving down a main road, not well lit, but i saw nothing on the road....

whatever it was was metal as i heard the ting ting ting as it bounces down the road after the destruction had been done

I remember a show that did this to a Pajero in the 80's when a buch of crazy guys followed the tropic of capricorn across Aus...
Old bushmans trick for holey fuel tanks... from what I remember...
It lasted for ages... was a big hole too....

Good Work!!
