My car has developed a strange rattling type of sound. I can only hear it when the revs are around 2000 rpm. Its bloody annoying. Any ideas what it may be?

A quick guess would be the intake resonators?? or the exhaust ones for that matter, i am not 100% sure, failing that might be the lifters, i am getting a rattling too, but at about 1K

Could be anything I guess. It's hard to pin point where it is exactly coming from.

It only happens whilst driving. If I stop the car, put in in neutral and rev it to 2000 it doesn't make any sound. Could it be the the auto trans? I think it needs an oil change.

Could be anything.... could be worth chocking (Wedge type thing) the front wheels and having someone with the hand and foot brake on (HARD), in drive squeeze the throttle a little for a short period. whilst the bonnet is open to try and pin point where it's coming from....go from there.

Cars have a habit of making silly noises, and they can travel around too making it even harder to find them....

Will give that a try tomorrow. Trans fluid has gone light brown so I'll be booking it in for a trans flush soon. Thanks for the tips.

My TF had an unusual rattle under acceleration, it turned out to be a belt tensioner pulley that needed removing.. mitsu apparently recalled this.. when i got them to remove this the problem never came back. It could also be another pulley with a stuffed bearing? I'm not sure, just speaking of my experience.

Would that be the tension pulley for the power steering oil pump? Or the AC and Alternator? Does anyone know what year Mitsu stopped putting them on?

I have an astron2 and you complain about rattles... *slap* :P

Does it rattle stationary or only while under load? :)

I'm not totally sure what year they stopped putting them on, the one they pulled off mine had no other specific purpose but to tension the belt, it didnt actually run anything like power steer, a/c etc. all i know is that i got it taken off in 2003/04 sometime on my 98 TF.
