Hey there AMC members!!:D

I've just sifted through 13 pages of search results and haven't found what I wanted.

Common fault: the paint on the rear windscreen mould is flaking...looks like crap. from what I've read in the service manual it looks like a straightforward thing to change..
Has anyone done this on their TJ's?? was it an easy thing to do or did it get really ugly real quick..My screen isn't rattling or anything just the strip of painted rubber around the rear screen is looking like *****e.

So has anyone attempted and/or done this "repair" ?? As my VR-X is looking rather sad around the rear screen

Thanks guys

Steve

I have had this as well. Pain in the ass, I just kept hitting it every week with a towel rag or a rough cloth till it was all removed, never would have even noticed it had happened. Then i got a new one fitted and started all over again

Edit: Oh yeah, have heard of people repainting it, but in my experience with paints ( I used to work for a slipway so I've had a bit) if it flexes (and that seal does a quite a bit) the paint will crack. If it cracks, It will peel, flake, lift. My best bet would be to use a rubber/vinyl dye. Though i have heard that most vinyl dyes aren't UV stabilized so it'll fade

common fault with most of the rear window seals, can't remember which model they fixed it and went back to the harder rubber, but it involves replacing the entire rear windscreen (unless you're amazingly careful and can remove one without a single crack or chip!) so = decent $$$ for small outcome.

i had a guy out today to replace my windscreen (finally figured out how to replace the rear vision mirror! you dont! :headbange ) I quizzed him about the rear, and he suggested just peeling the rest off yourself (or let it all flake over time) as theres nothing you can do about it.

i just gernie'd the f*** out of mine to get as much if not all of the paint off it.. and hit it with a tyre gel.. u know the stuff that 'keeps your tyres black for weeks, not days!' stuff.. give it a quick wipe when ever i wash her and do the tyres..

There are 2 reasons for Mitsubishi changing the rear window garnish section on the TJ series.

First is because of the surface paint peeling off.

Second is because of the rear window squeak.
I had to beat my friendly dealer up on 4 ocassions before they would change it.

Means a new, i suspect smaller, rear glass and a new section that has a very noticeable channel in it all round.

Been in a year now. NO peeling and NO squeaks - well worth it.

Unless you have a late 2004 car or one with extended factory warranty then you are out of luck for a freebie.

seriously if you get all the paint off it and put some blackener, even armoural for god sake it will look a million bucks, not a big deal at all if you ask me..

I have a TF andn there is no sign of the problem. I just keep the thing supple with Meguiars Trim Detailer once every three weeks

Perhaps Mitsubishi painted it to prevent it breaking down because of UV rays. Can't see why else they would paint black rubber. I have tried to scape the paint off..........mind numbing job. Tried metho etc, also no good. Sure don't want to scratch the paintwork.
Some members have real tricked up cars, do you have ----- looking rear window seal???
It does not look like good quality rubber. Windscreen companies such as o'Bien say replacement is the only option and they do not replace seal/rubber only, it comes as a unit with the glass about $500. Guy I spoke to said under warranty they would replace it all just because of peeling. Bought my car second hand so too late now. Maybe in December i will make a tool and scape all the paint off, then use tyre black or some such. Any suggestions welcome. Mine does not squeak, just looks crap. TJ by the way. seems Mitsubishi continued with the paint peeling off for quite some time. What are the TL-TW SERIES like?

thread mine alert. Mitsubishi no longer honour this on a car as old as mine. How much have people paid for a complete new replacement rear window and without the flaky surround?
