anyone know what the purpose of the big square steel weight hanging off the diff on the rear in an AWD does?

i havent seen many cars with a big weight hanging off the diff...

its just bolted to it and dosent do anything mechanically...

only those who have an awd or have recently looked under one will know what im talking about

To make the car 50:50 weight front to back???

Subaru imprezas have the same man, i dunno why, maybe like a dampener to take out vibrations, or something. NVH reasons..

Yup, it would be to dampen a resonance at a certain rpm.

How is a small weight hanging off the rear diff going to take a car with something like 65:35 weight distributions to 50:50?

It is a vibration damper.
Weight and amount of rubber are carefully chosen to arrive at a tuned mass to dampen out a resonance from the diff assembly.

Lump of grey cast iron suspended in rubber to a bracket to the diff assembly.

Probably made by someone like Toyo Rubber.

A couple of years ago my company were quoting for the Aurion work.
