My car makes a "rattly noise" for a second when started; ('94 four cylinder). It ony happens when starting, and does it whether the car is cold first thing, or started after stopping during the day.

try adjusting the timing chains if you are at the limit of adjustment
little cover to undo on the timing chain cover

then the timing chains /cogs and guides need replacing
there is a kit you buy off ebay

That come free with every Astron series motor! You would have got that at no charge.

Woo-hoo, I belong :D
Thanks for that; I didn't think it was something serious, but now I can tell people it's a feature, not a failure!!!
And thanks for the chain adjusting stuff too :thumb:.

keep your oil clean and engine flushed every change... keeps the rattling away longer

didn't the 2nd gens come with auto tentioners so that wont work seeing as his is a tr/ts 94:D
Also im getting a rattle between 1500/2000rpm but im sure thats the idler pulley on the way out (between the ac and crank pulley)

mmm, oil and servicing intervals seems to be more of an issue with these motors than with some other cars, it seems?? That's cool, I'm a regular-servicing type person anyway!
This whole thing is a learning curve; I was in the sales game till late last year, (where I was spoiled with company cars for over ten years), and haven't actually owned a car for all that time, so I have to re-learn a lot of stuff.
smooth2, noted above, does the idler pulley still exist if the car doesn't have A/C (mine doesn't :()???

hmmmm not sure never seen a 2nd gen without aircon. but to be sure pop the hood and look,id say no if you have only one belt (crank pulley, alternator pulley). but if you have 2 belts then yes. just the 2nd belt would be smaller.but can't see why there would be the need for it if you have no a/c.
But with that said if you have no idler pulley the only other things that spring to mind is the water pump bearings or the Alt bearings.

and also.....
As you can (just) see in the photo, there is a gap between the bumper bar and the headlight, whereas there's none on the right. What is wrong and can I fix this myself, and how??

the information was out of the TR/TS factory manual
the second gen has the guide tensioner adjustment for the TR 4 cyl for the balance chains
running the oil pump
TR/TS is fitted with the oil pump chain tensioner for the timing cog chain
(thats the difference)

you sure??Not doubting u just wanna get my facts right.
how come there's only one way to adjust it on the tp manualy.
Cos there isn't an auto adjuster for first gens right??
Or does the first gens only have one tentioner for both chains, where as the tr/ts has an auto adjust for the oil pump chain and a manual one for the balance chain (or vice versa).
Cos now i know that there is a manual adjuster for the 2nd gens i might have to see if the rattle from my friends tr will go away if i adjust it to finger tight. All this time i was under the impression it did it automaticlly so i told him that he needs to do the chains/cogs/gaskets/stepped bolt etc etc cos that is the only thing that will stop the rattle.last time i take someones word haha every time i do it bites me thats why i started to do all the work on my tp in the first place. Maybe i should just buy a 2nd gen so then i don't have to ask i can just pull it apart to see:D .

Stagma and I have done both first and second gen chains on 4 cyl engines
first gens do not have a tensioner for the timing cog chains
secon gens have tensioners for guides and the oil pump tensioner for the timing chain cog

Ok ta, just trying to get my knowledge on par.
So the manual tentioner on the tp is just for the oil pump chain??

OK, just to throw a feline among the columbidae, I was at my local car audio/auto electrician place today, and he assures me that the rattle is the pinion gear on the starter motor, and that $167 all up will fix it!!
