Ok, ive lost 4th. Driving home tonight, accidently hit N then threw it back to D. However i didnt let off the accelerator...so it was like a Netural Dump. Now my car has lost 4th, and refuses to kick back gears when the foot is at the floor.
Any ideas?
How much would a gearbox cost??

that sucks!

sounds very similar to my old car, it lost 4th aswell.

mine was gradual though, every now and then i would be driving and when it was time to get into 4th gear it would just rev out.

that would become more and more frequent

do you have a button to keep over drive off?

keep it off for when u need to drive around.

as for getting it fixed. i vaguely remember someone telling me once that it was the overdrive clutch that needed replacing and cost them something like $600+..

your almost better off taking a chance with a second hand trans from a wreck with low ks. an auto trans wont be more than $200, ask gav im sure he has an auto tn in his backyard somewhere, then whatever it is to put it in!

thats really bad luck mate

Yea dude, theres an overdrive button. If i have overdrive off, its just got three gears. So basically overdrive is always off.
I switched it on and off a few times, made no difference.
On the freeway on the way home @ 100km/h it was doing 3400RPM. I dont like it doing that. I honestly hope its a real simple problem.

yea, u can drive around without 4th for everyday use.. probably wouldnt do it on the fwy for tooo long. but yea

there are 2speed automatic 1978 corrolas out there.. 3 speed is a dream! hahah

whatever the problem is, its definately inside the gearbox and its gonna come down to having to open it up, or having it replaced.

take it to an auto trans place, see what they say.

start calling around some mitsu/magna wreckers. see what prices you can get.

Does the dash tell you it's on and off if you press the button a few times?

If so, auto problem.

If not, could be wiring.

I just sent my manual box in today to get checked out before i do the conversion.
They said it will be around the $150 region.
Just ring up a few places.
You might be without a car for a few weeks though...

Manual will not happen. I dont have a manual licence, have maybe 20 hours exp in a manual and the car is being sold before i go to NZ, which is in Feb.

Tuffy, is that price just for a check and service?

Pretty much. there going to tip it apart and well, make sure the box is good i guess...
Worse comes to worse, Go wreckers, get a 2nd hand transmission, Get it fully checked out before it goes in! (will save some hassle if its a crap one) and you will be right

No, I don't have a spare auto right now. Mitsibits in Mordialloc might have one with a 3 month warranty, give them a call. They do honor it :P

Is it only 4th gone, and not 1 and 2 as well?

IF you're going to sell it in a couple of months i wouldn't bother fixing it. Sell it now. You'll never get the money back that you spend fixing it.

if you want to make a trip to SA, i have a auto box sitting here that you can have for cheap. its the one out of my car. was reconditioned about 50,000km ago. worked well when my car existed.

BCX7 - dont tempt me lol

Leigh - I have to spend the money. I cant sell it now, cause i still need it to get to work. The idea is sell it a few weeks before i go to NZ. I need to fix it because i cant sell it for any money when its missing a gear.

Also, the old man took it for a drive this morning. Same problem. So he reckons just drive it til my mechanic has time to have a look.

wait read then PM me for more info about TP autos

what is the colour of your auto oil

for fourth gear operation
the overdrive clutch kit is not to expensive and easy if you want to do the job your self

and there is a kickdown switch on the top end of the accelerator pedal that is adjustable
as is the kick down band solenoid on the box

I'm sure you'll find them again. They'll turn up sooner or later man.

When you have some spare time, hunt around for another GB man

The box has grenaded. Welcome to the club, your card'll be in the mail eventually.:bowrofl:

Madmagna's wrecking a TP, the box seems to be fine, PM him, or BCX7 has a box, but you may need a different TCU to run that one.

Changing it's not too hard, though I found it easier to lift the motor and box to swap, but it can be done with the motor in situ.

Edit: In response to Buffy below, I still have a TP TCU that worked, if I can find it, and you're coming to the Thursday meet, I'll bring it with me
