View Full Version : Parcel tray sub

Did any 3rd gens come out with this factory?

I can't sacrifice any boot space. So I was thinking maybe a free air in the parcel tray, or do one in the wheel well and remove the tool box plastic thingy. Not sure how this would sound when there is stuff in the boot though.

Cheers

I'd go one in the wheel well - using the inside of the spare tyre as the box. You could fit a sealed 10" in there pretty easily.

my KL has what looks like a nice cutout for a 10inch sub to attach to the parcel shelf.
tho, it is covered with some black moulded plastic that looks to come out very easy.

My old KE had a 8 or 10" round hole in the parcel tray from factory, looked perfect for a sub.

Unfortunately the hole is filled in on the KJ.

Who can not afford to sacrific 0.5cuft for a 10inch or 1cuft for a 12inch? How much bigger do you want your boot?

Can someone with a KE or KF take a photo of this and post it up? I'm interested to see how that looks, it'd be handy as to fit one straight into the parcel shelf, might cause a few problems with rear seat passengers at volume, but meh lol

Cheers MitchellO, so based on what you've said Gas_Hed, all the KE and presumably KF's (since they are basically the same) have this space open and ready to use? Would a sub perform with much of a difference mounted like that? I would happily use that to save the space in the boot (when I've got a KE/KF lol) if the quality of the bass isn't affected, or at least not affected greatly.

I'm presume it would sound slightly different given the boot is acting as the box, and the driver itself is inside the cabin to an extent, right?

Cutting into your parcel shelf is a big no no, can get you in trouble and damage the structural integirty of your car.

Unless you have the balls to do a proper IB setup in your boot (sealing off the boot from the cabin, i wouldnt bother. You can fit 9's in the doors behind stock trims with a bit of work, will sound much better!

No, I am saying that my KE Ei had this cut out and a round gold coloured metal plate in that position. Hopefully my car wasnt a rare one-off though, as this was pretty cool and I always meant to ask about it.

Of course somebody has to start a topic about it 6 weeks after I sell the car

9inch and like the 11inch focals will cost a fair bit of $$$ but will sound good yeah. All budget depending. Get a 10inch that needs a 0.5cuft sealed and do it the easy way.

Sub in parcel tray will be craptacular.

Box will need to be built around it, sealed etc. Shelf will need to be covered in dynamat. Chances of subwoofer vibrating seals off the ****ty box you have are very high.

Single 12 ftw.

I used to run 2 6in 2 ways in high pass and 2 8inch subs on my parcel shelf in my old TP. Sounded great for what it was. The EL Falcons have a 10inch space cut out as well and i think the fairmont ghia/fairlanes actually get a woofer there also. Adding a 10inch to the parcel shelf would certainly make a difference and it's probably the cheapest option.

I don't know about craptacular. Since its screwed into the frame of the car, it'd be more solid than in a box in the boot, but you probably shouldn't crank it as hard, as I wouldn't like to see what would happen to the parcel shelf with say 1000w of bass going through it.

I can't see why it'd be bad if you had a simline sub mounted there running off a 200w amp say. Won't be mind blowing bass, but should still be a heck of a lot more than speakers can provide.

Im in process of building a production molded sub enclosure for the 3rd gen magna that supports most 12" subs. Its pretty snug out of the way behind the right light assembly. Heres some pics of the plug ive constructed to give you an example.

Should be pumping them out in a few weeks if you want to wait a bit, AMC members will get a discount.

Roof racks can't hold 50kg worth of steel poles.

I'm going to measure up how much space I can use in the wheel well for an enclosure.

All I hear are excuses. If you dont wanna use the space, except below average results. Easy as that. Its like saying, "I wanna have a sub put I don't want to buy an amp so I am gunna run it off the headunit."

Why don't you look into an enclosure that can be easily removed. I'm sure you don't want to go cruising around with the sub on with a tent in the boot. If you put it in the wheel arch and put this huge tent and crap on top it wont work very good anyways...

Borrow a slim line sub, try and fit all this stuff in the boot that you "need" and see how you go.

These aren't excuses, its what you have to do when you have 2 kids. I don't expect to have the worlds be SQ with my setup, as with everything it is always a compromise.

Even with just a sub box, if you try and fit a push chair and all the mod cons required when you take a child around + groceries, you will realise space is a premium.

Dude, you have already got the answer...

You can fit 9's in the doors behind stock trims with a bit of work, will sound much better!

Seriously, if you don't want to loose any space in your boot, then look elsewhere to put your sub! Tim's sounds great with his boot subs turned off, that's just using the 9's in his doors, and there's more than enough bass to keep most people happy.
You can also look in the Qmax 6" sub as well, that comes with a pretty neat small box for about $279 at most car audio retailers - I had a pair of them sitting on the floor at the back seats.. if you've got young, or very short kids, they wont even notice the loss in foot room! :P

I don't see how - they're talking about putting 9's in the rear doors (which I imagine requires a bit of custom work, but anyway), not replacing the 6.5's in the front doors with 9's.

Nope, they are in the front doors behind the stock trims, only need a baffle cut out which takes 30 minutes, no speakers in the rears.

Running a 3-4 way setup so midrange is unaffected (midbasses play 50hz-> ~350Hz)
But otherwise would have the same midrange results as a 6.5 inch behind the doors as they are in the same loaction (just flat against the door instead of a slight angle)

Elate 9 3-Way $1263 ( great set )

Have you seen you door trim off? If you have can you remember the pastic bit that holds the 6.5inch speaker in? What you do is you take that out and make a MDF one with a bigger hole. If clearence is an issue, add another on top of that to the desired hieght. ( Magna has pretty big doors though ).

Phoar that is some crazy prices.

I'm borrowing a friends 6x9's which are from the same series as my front coaxials, so I'm keen to see how much bass they deliver.

I want to go to Jaycar and try that 8" amp/sub combo they got, won't be nothing like a custom setup but might provide the right amount of bass I need.

With a 9" in the door, it would have to be pretty shallow in depth? would it not.

They take up more room than a slim line sub + enclsoure because they are round.

Hertz have some cheaper 8inch 2 way sets. The Space K8L retails for $553. They are the slim line ones..

If you are happy with an 8 + enclosure might be worth looking into the DD?

Focal make some 5inch woofers, you could make some tiny sealed enclosures for them and mount them on the parcel shelf. A sealed sub woofer in the cabin of the car is a hell of allot of difference then one in the boot, SQ wise.

I was thinking about doing the exact same thing to my KE Verada but was convinced otherwise by basically every audio shop in town and ended up buying a 12" sony x-plod in a box. To tell the truth, subs in boxes for me are a pain in the butt, and I would really like to hear more about how to put an open air sub in the parcel rack instead. I know the sound wouldn't be as good, but I'm running standard gear everywhere else and a 150W RMS amp anyways. Can I expect decent bass response considering my situation from an open air 8" parcel shelf sub?

I helped a mate do an install in his sr laser. It is running 2 amps and 2 10"subs. The subs use the spare tyre well area. Firstly just fibreglassed the **** out of everything to seal it. The used MDF to make the base of unit and mount the subs. Amps aare mounted up against back of seat and put into boxes basically covered with perspex to view through. Whole system was the covered with carpet to add to the appearance. System went on to produce 140+ db on first test. Have pics on phone so will add them at later stage.
