The previous owner cracked the clear plastic "glass" of the instrument cluster on my TP sedan, so today I decided to fix it. I took out the cluster and removed the clear plastic. It is glued on, so does not come off easily - I had to break it and prise off the bits, then tidy it up as best I could. I then made a replacement front panel out of 3mm perspex.

I put the cluster back in and it looks Ok, but now the clock light does not come on. The clock is actually running though. I took the cluster out again and checked all the removeable globes I could find. They are all working. Where is the light for the clock? (it is a digital clock in an analogue dash - standard on the EXE and GLX)

Also the tacho stopped working when I had an engine degrease done a couple of weeks ago. I'm trying to check it out but can't find which wire it is at the instrument cluster end. A search of this forum indicates it should be a white wire with gray shielding. I can't find any shielded wires at all going to my instrument cluster. Any ideas?

i believe the internal light, you had to remove the clock unit from the inside of the dash cluster, is a pain in the ass, but always good to crack open the cluster every now and then to make sure the resistive wire is ok and all the screws are nice and tight.

i'll see if i can get a pic for you, got a few dismantled clusters here.

Edit: pics added, as you can see you have to remove the clock unit, then that black housing with the wires sports the globe, twist out and replace with a T6.5.... i think 6.5

Thanks, I'll have another try in the morning. I should not have disturbed any of the bulbs anyway, so I will try unplugging and re-plugging the connectors in case I didn't click one into place correctly.

always good to scrubs all metal contacts, minus the flexible pc board, as oxidization, especially when removed from the contacting source can build up, and stop connection (power) to a device.
may not be your globes, more likely your connections oxidized.

I took the cluster out again, undid all the screws but could not find how to get the clock out either from the front or the back. I had to give up on it. I put it back together and back in but there is still no clock light and the tacho. still doesn't work.

The Gregorys and Haynes manuals are hopeless. They don't even mention it. I'm wondering how the two-stage lighting for the clock works. i.e. when you turn on the ignition, the clock should light up brightly but should dim when you turn the headlights or parkers on.

i believe the voltage to the globe simply reduces by 1/2... could be wrong.

as for removing it, you should just have to remove the 5-6? screws on the back of the cluster, remove the speedo/ rpm facia, and grab the housing of the clock.

not sure bout ure rpm signal, if it were just the cluster, i could tell you, but if theres a wire in the engine bay wouldnt have a clue.

with the tacho check that the needle is on correctly, after dismantling my dash it took me a bit to get everything functioning correctly again.

If the tacho failed after degreasing, it could be some water or corrosion on the terminal on the connector. The tacho wire ends up at the power regulator connected to the ignition coil. If you lift off the rubber boot over the back of the connector on the power regulator, it is a thick white wire with shielding on it.

I'm confident the tacho problem is just water or a poor connection rather than the tacho itself. However I still can't find the shielded wire. Just to be clear, this is the carby version that has the problem. I also have a TP wagon which is EFI. I can't even find the wire on it. Is the power regulator also known as the power transistor? Anyway I don't think the carby version has one.

Edit: I drove out to Penrith today and stopped at Blacktown on the way back to get a couple of parts at Pick and Payless. The heat from the extended drive must have done the trick because when I drove off from Pick and Payless, the tacho was working again.
