could be tuning
plugs
increase the idle screw at the cable

if carby choke adjustment

if EFI stepper motor /TPS/air flow meter

why not sleep in or stay at home and not use the car

Thanks for that,it is an EFI,so how do I fix it

EFI or Carby?

If EFI, the idle speed controller (ISC) may not be working or may need adjustment. Having said that the ISC on mine doesn't work at all but the engine idles fine, hot or cold - just needed adjustment of the throttle stop screw.

If it is carby, then the automatic choke is not working properly or needs adjustment.

It is an EFI,How do I check it or adjust it

Have somebody else switch the ignition on while you are under the bonnet watching the throttle lever. You should hear the ISC motor start running and see the throttle lever open slightly. After about 15 seconds, the ISC motor should retract and close the throttle.

If nothing happens, either the ISC motor is burned out or the idle switch that controls it is faulty. Checking both the switch and the motor is easy enough but hard to describe without diagrams and pictures. I suggest getting the Haynes workshop manual. The procedure is described on page 4B-7. I have to say I hate the Haynes manual but it is way better than nothing. The factory workshop manual is far better (its about a thousand pages) but they are expensive and hard to get.

Hi I have tired that and I cannot hear the ISC motor start running or see the throttle lever open slightly. What is my best option

i had a similar problem last week.
very lumpy rough cold start, had to hold the pedal down for a bit till it warmed up.
I thought it was a few things like the tps/ics/afm/atmosphric sensor or coolant sensor.

so i changed the pulgs/leads and spark plugs and cleaned the connections. It got worst and would not start.
bought a new dizzy from repco and put that in, once the timing was reset and the idle it has been a dream ever since:D
So my efi tp auto with 130xxx klms had a dodgy distributor and a new one fixed it. starts first turn and has never run better.

go buy a second ISC motor from the wrecker

you should see that ISC motor contract as soon as the ignition is turned on

then check the TPS setting if idle is still unstable

Remember that the first gen engines take a while to get the oil pressure up, and in this time it will rattle heaps and generally run very rough. Even my brand new engine does this some mornings on a cold start.

When the idle is set, a procedure has to be followed to set it properly, and if this isn't followed, the ECU typically learns the wrong set point and doesn't idle very well. This is especially evident if it starts doing something stupid like pulsating the idle speed, which is a sign of poor calibration.

If it's an auto, it should be about 850 RPM in idle, and right on 650 RPM in D. These seem to be the sweet spots for the car I have discovered from tweaking it so much lol

i had the same problem with my wagon. ISC motor keeped sticking. Ended up pulling it apart regreasing and resoldering wires to motor and now works as good as new. Car idles at 850 rpm and maintains rpms when aircon and electric fans etc kick in
